Foundation receives grant
The Atlantic County Library Foundation has received a $1,000 Hurricane Recovery Grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
As a result of Hurricane Sandy, the basement of the Brigantine Branch of the Atlantic County Library System was flooded, and is under remediation and reconstruction. The basement housed the branch’s book sale, administered by the Atlantic County Library Foundation, which generated nearly all program funding for events through the year. The grant money will allow the branch to resume programming, including the “Tell Us Your Sandy Stories” video project, from its temporary Outpost location at the Brigantine Beach Community Center and from the library building once renovations have been completed.

Atlantic Cape Community College’s Alumni Association Advisory Committee is accepting nominations for the Atlantic Cape Community College President’s Distinguished Alumni Award. The award recognizes an Atlantic Cape graduate who has distinguished themselves through professional, personal, public or community-based accomplishments.

Walk your dog to fight cancer
Bring your favorite pooch on a walk to fight cancer at the American Cancer Society Bark for Life of Atlantic County at 9 a.m. April 27 on the Linwood Bike Path, starting at Linwood Market parking lot, 136 W. Poplar Ave.
Registration and check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. followed by the opening ceremony at 9 a.m. and then the one-mile walk.
Bark for Life is a noncompetitive walk event for dogs and their owners to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society’s fight against cancer. Dogs and their owners can enjoy games, demonstrations and contests throughout the event.
Cost for participants is $10 per dog (two dogs maximum per participant.) Early registration is encouraged.
Atlantic Cape group lauded
Atlantic Cape Community College’s Alpha Delta Mu Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society was awarded several honors at the annual PTK Middle States Regional Convention in Baltimore recently.
PTK is the international honor society for two-year colleges. Members have earned a 3.5 GPA and 12 credits at Atlantic Cape.
The chapter received the Five Star Development Level Chapter award for demonstrating an overall level of excellence in leadership, scholarship, fellowship and service for the fourth year in a row.
In addition, several individuals were honored for their service to the chapter, including Gabriella Mayorga, of Galloway, chapter president; Tamica Johnson, of Absecon, vice president of membership; and Lisa Nguyen, of Atlantic City, distinguished chapter member.
PTK adviser Holly R. Schultheis, of Galloway Township, was one of four to receive the Paragon Advisor Award for her efforts to guide Atlantic Cape’s chapter.
Chapter member Felix German Contreras, of Galloway, was elected New Jersey state president, regional office.

Lighthouse open for spring break
Looking for something to do with the kids on Spring Break? Absecon Lighthouse is open Thursdays through Mondays now thru March 25 and will then be open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 27 through April 8. The last climb is at 3:30pm.
Go to abseconlighthouse.org and print off a special coupon for $1 off admission when you climb. The museum, grounds, and parking are all free. Normal business hours will resume on April 11, with the lighthouse being open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays.

Foundation receives donation
The Atlantic Cape Community College Foundation accepted a $15,000 donation from Soroptimist International of Atlantic City on March 5 to establish an endowed scholarship for Atlantic Cape students enrolled in health care-related studies.

The Galloway Women’s Club is offering a $250 scholarship to a senior girl going to an accredited post-secondary program next year. The deadline to apply April 17. Taste of Town moves to larger space
The second annual International Taste of the Town event is moving to a larger venue at Renault Winery’s Grand Ballroom from 4 to 8 p.m. April 28 at 72 N. Bremen Ave., Egg Harbor City. Last year’s inaugural event sold out when it was held at the city’s Ambulance Squad Building. This year’s event, sponsored by the Greater Egg Harbor City Chamber of Commerce, will increase attendance by 50 percent when 300 foodies sample international cuisines prepared by the area’s top chefs.
A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Community FoodBank of New Jersey Southern Branch. Visitors can bring a non-perishable food item to the event to donate to the Kitchen Door food pantry at the Moravian Church.

Group offered for substance abusers
The Presbyterian Church at Hammonton has created a group to offer hope and support to those with a family member struggling with substance abuse. This group provides a safe, confidential gathering place where stories are heard without judgment. It is a place for those who have watched loved ones struggle with addiction, who have felt its sting.
The parents, guardians, spouses, children and others affected by family members who struggle with a suspected and/or confirmed substance abuse can find and offer support and learn more about addiction. The group offers hope and the knowledge that we are not alone.
The group meets from 7 to 8:30 p. m. the third Monday of each month at the Presbyterian Church at Hammonton, 326 Bellevue Ave. The next meetings are March 18 and April 15. Hurricane Sandy recovery shower set
Families affected by Hurricane Sandy will benefit from the Sandy Recovery Shower, an event organized by the Jewish community to collect new household items for those still in need. The Sandy Recovery Shower will take place at 4 p.m. April 17 in the auditorium at the Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center, 501 N. Jerome Ave. in Margate. Light refreshments will be served.
Attendees are asked to bring donations of household items. Donations needed include microwave ovens, toasters, tea kettles, queen size sheets and comforters (beige), non-allergenic bed pillows, and vacuum cleaners. Gift cards also will be accepted. A more detailed “wish list” is available from the sponsoring organizations.

Jewelry-making classes forming
Spring jewelry-making classes are now forming at the Ventnor City Cultural Art Center at 6500 Atlantic Ave. in Ventnor.
Learn to work with metal, stones and beads to make beautiful wearable art. You will learn traditional techniques and develop an individual style, making pins, earrings, necklaces and bracelets to wear or give as gifts. Learn to work with glass,crystal and semi-precious stones and beads as well as a variety of metal jewelry findings.
These seven-week courses will begin on March 16 and 17, and will end on May 3 and 4 (with March 29 and 30 off). Veterans civil-rights seminar set
The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office in partnership with The American Legion will conduct a regional veterans’ civil-rights seminar from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 15 at the New Jersey Casino Commission offices, Public Meeting Room, 1st Floor, Tennessee Avenue and the Boardwalk in Atlantic City. Angrisani named employee of year
Family Service’s Food Service Head Cook Joseph Angrisani, was recently voted Family Service’s Employee of the Year by members of Family Service’s staff. Angrisani received the honor after being recognized as an Employee of the Month, along with other colleagues throughout the year. Family Service employees vote on their choice for Employee of the Year from the winners of the monthly awards.
As Head Cook of Food Service, Angrisani oversees food preparation, handling, safety, purchasing and periodic state inspections. Through Angrisani’s efforts, Family Service receives many accolades from all served.

Downtown Hammonton celebrates literature
On Third Thursday evening, March 21, Downtown Hammonton brings some of your favorite literature to life in “The Classics: Lasting Literature.” This townwide event focuses on famous literature from antiquity through modern times and visitors are encouraged to dress the part of their favorite classic character. Third Thursdays in Hammonton offer extended hours until 9 p.m. with participating shops, art galleries, and restaurants offering related entertainment and specials.
At the Noyes Museum Shop in Hammonton, Richard Stockton College students will deliver poetry readings based on classic literature. Two blocks of readings will be performed, one starting at 6:30 p.m. and the other at 7:30 p.m.; there will be a break for refreshments at 7 p.m. During a portion of the night students will present famous poems from antiquity, recited in Latin, followed by the English translation. Other works to be recited include the third canto of Dante’s Inferno, modern versions of West Wind, and original student sonnets based on Shakespearean sonnets. N.J. hosts student competition for those of Indian origin
The North South Foundation, a volunteer driven 501(c) e organization will hold an educational contest for students in first through 12th grades who are of Indian origin, on April 28 at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford. At least one parent or grandparent must be of Indian origin.
The proceeds collected through registration charges will be used for scholarships for disadvantaged college students in India. The Cherry Hill chapter of North South Foundation will help participants from the Atlantic City area with a math workshop, if enough students are interested. Solve murder mystery at lighthouse
Historic Absecon Lighthouse is presenting a murder mystery performance, “Lit With a Dim Bulb,” at 7 p.m. March 23, at the lighthouse, 31 S. Rhode Island Ave., Atlantic City. The year is 1909, and the lightkeeper has reported seeing the Jersey Devil at the top of the lighthouse, a true Lighthouse legend, as reported in the Atlantic City Sunday Gazette. Three lightkeepers race to the top in pursuit, but only two come down.
The event costs $25 per person. Tony Boloney’s pizza, beer, wine and soft drinks will be served beginning at 6:30 p.m., and the performance begins at 7 p.m. A tower climb is included with the price of admission. South Jersey Aids Alliance elects officers
The South Jersey AIDS Alliance has announced the election of officers to its Board of Directors. They include Lori Link, president; Joel Ballesteros, vice president; Douglas Kelley, secretary; and James Foley, treasurer and immediate past president.
The alliance’s programs and services span 1,300 square miles in Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties, serving about 2,500 people each year. The organization is headquartered in Atlantic City and operates client centers in Atlantic City, Wildwood, Bridgeton, Millville and Camden. Free vacations offered
The Ocean City Tourism Commission, Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce and Ocean City Board of Realtors have once again joined forces to promote “America’s Greatest Family Resort” by awarding eleven families a fun-filled, week-long family vacation in Ocean City.
Each of the eleven winners will receive a seven-night stay in a three or four bedroom condo that sleeps as many as eight people. Pictures, addresses and descriptions of each unit are available on the contest entry page.
Contest entry is through the Chamber’s website at OceanCityVacation.com. Entrants may enter one time for each of the eleven weeks per email address. Winners will be randomly selected and notified about three weeks before their vacation. Winners will be selected beginning June 3 and each week following until Aug.12.
Information sessions to help aid abused and neglected children set
Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children of Atlantic and Cape May Counties will hold two information sessions at 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. on March 18 at the CASA of Atlantic and Cape May Counties office at 321 Shore Road in Somers Point. The 60-minute program gives an overview of the organization and shows how CASA volunteers advocate in court on behalf of abused and neglected children. Attending the information session is the first step to becoming a CASA volunteer.
Habitat for Humanity Atlantic County is looking for volunteers to set up, staff the Habitat table and tear down tables. Volunteers are needed for two- to three-hour time slots. They will be selling T-shirts and house pins and may have display boards set up. There will also be a sign-up sheet for new volunteers and a waiting list for prospective homeowner applications.

Applications are now being accepted for Magner Scholarships administered by Atlantic Cape Community College for the 2013-14 school year. The endowment scholarship was created by a bequest from the Magner family and is awarded to students from Atlantic or Cape May counties, with preference given to applicants interested in pursuing a health-related career.
Three $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to students pursuing a degree at any accredited college. Students must have a 3.0 grade-point average or higher or comparable work experience and demonstrated financial need. The deadline to apply is March 29.

Women’s forum planned
The Atlantic County Advisory Commission on Women will hold its 16th annual Women’s Forum for Change breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. March 21 at Ron Jaworski’s Blue Heron Pines Golf Club, 550 W. Country Club Drive, Egg Harbor City.
“Change and Challenges: An Intergenerational Dialogue Between Women and Girls” will feature keynote speaker Teressa Griffin, author of “Lies That Limit: Uncover the Truth of Who You Really Are.” Griffin is also the host of “Office Talk” on KYW NewsRadio and the founder of Spirit of Purpose, LLC.
Commission members will lead small-group discussions to encourage conversations concerning changes and challenges facing women today and to share knowledge learned from life experiences.

Easter events at aquarium
Children and their families are invited to have Breakfast with the Easter Bunny from 8:30 to 10 a.m. March 23 at the Atlantic City Aquarium. Advance reservations are now being taken. The event will start with an Easter egg hunt for children to age 12, where they will search for candy-filled eggs. One lucky recipient will find the golden egg, which comes with a free family membership to the Atlantic City Aquarium.
Breakfast will follow with the Easter Bunny and the aquarium’s mascot, Seaweed the Sea Turtle. Bring cameras. Both the Easter Bunny and Seaweed the Sea Turtle will be available to pose for photos. All children will receive a free holiday-themed gift.
Cost is $14.95 for children ages 2 to 12, $5 for children age 1 and younger, and $17.95 for adults and children older than 12. Aquarium members receive a $3 discount per ticket. Tickets include full-day admission to the Atlantic City Aquarium that day.

Aid available for hurricane victims
Representatives from New Jersey Hope and Healing will be available to help residents cope in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Atlantic County Office Building, 1333 Atlantic Ave., Atlantic City. The service is free and no appointment is necessary.
Traumatic events such as Sandy affect people in many different ways. After the tragedy, adults and children may feel extremely upset, stressed or depressed. It is especially important for those who experience severe emotional reactions to seek professional guidance.
The New Jersey Hope and Healing initiative includes the New Jersey Disaster Mental Health Helpline which individuals may call, toll free, for confidential mental health information and referral at 877-294-HELP (4357) and TTY: 877-294-4356. The phones are answered by trained counselors who may assist anyone experiencing anxiety or depression.
Music lecture set
Learn about folk literature in composed music at the March free music lecture by Paul M. Somers, sponsored by the Bay-Atlantic Symphony. Discover how composers used epics, sagas, fairy tales, legends, and folk heroes in their works ranging from incidental and program music to symphonies, overtures, songs, and opera.

Lessons in boating safety available
The Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer a boating safety education course in “About Boating Safely” beginning on March 16 at the Atlantic City Coast Guard Station at 900 Beach Ave. The eight-hour course will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will cover topics such as boating law, safety equipment, safe boating, navigation, boating problems, etc. The class will also be offered on April 20, May 18, June 15, July 20 and Sept. 21.

The Casino Career Institute at Atlantic Cape Community College has prepared more than 50,000 people for rewarding careers in gaming and continues to offer top-notch training for those who wish to enter the expanding casino profession.

5K run scheduled May 4
The Hammonton Mothers’ Club will sponsor the Hammonton 5K Run For Fun at 9 a.m. May 4 at the Hammonton Lake Park, 100 Sports Drive, Hammonton. Proceeds of the event will benefit Hammonton Youth Recreation and the Hammonton Parks and Recreation Department, which provides recreational programs and playground facilities in the greater Hammonton area.
The course will be a police assisted run through the quaint and historic streets of Hammonton, starting and ending at the Hammonton Lake Park. There will also be a one-mile family walk on a traffic-free track. Prizes and medals will be awarded to the top male and female runners. Other awards will be given to the top male and female in many age categories.

Foodie Tuesdays scheduled
Foodie Tuesdays at Richard Stockton College in Hammonton are a series of continuing education courses focusing on culinary education. The classes are designed so that participants can sign up for one, all or any number of the courses. Pepco Holdings Inc., parent company of Atlantic City Electric, has donated $250,000 to the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund (HSNJRF). Established by Gov. Chris Christie and chaired by first lady Mary Pat Christie, the HSNJRF is a nonprofit organization that raises and distributes funds to organizations in support of the long-term recovery and rebuilding efforts of New Jersey communities affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Health care courses offered
The Health Professions Institute at Atlantic Cape Community College will offer a variety of programs to help health care professionals advance their skills.
Certified Nurse Aide will prepare students for employment in a long-term care facility, assisted living facility, adult medical day care or some hospitals, three sections, beginning March 1, April 1 and May 1.
In Patient Care Technician, students will learn basic patient-care skills, including: medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, CPR certification, phlebotomy, EKG, vital signs, patient care and HIPAA awareness, to prepare for careers as patient care technicians, phlebotomists or EKG technicians, beginning March 18.
In Phlebotomy Technician, students will learn blood-collection techniques, handling, transporting and processing blood specimens through laboratory practice on artificial arms and extensive clinical experience at area medical facilities, beginning April 1.
Certified Home Health Aide for CNAs is designed for the CNA who wants to become a certified home health aide, two Saturdays, May 11 and 18.
Emergency Medical Technician Certification will prepare students to perform basic life support. Participants will learn adult and pediatric medical and trauma assessment, basic airway support, use of AED, assisting patients with medication administration, splinting, bleeding control, lifting, transferring and transporting stretchers and patients, beginning Sept. 6.
Lecture and lab modules will take place at the Health Professions Institute at Atlantic Cape’s Worthington Atlantic City Campus, 1535 Bacharach Blvd. Clinical expertise will come from various hospital settings.

Meerwald in A.C. this summer
The A.J. Meerwald, New Jersey’s official tall ship, is scheduled to dock at Historic Gardner’s Basin, Atlantic City, from Aug. 1 to 11. Public tours and sails are scheduled, including themed sails with pirates, trawling for marine critters, romantic evening sails and a full-day Sailor Camp for children age 10 to 16 years.

Library offers language learning
The Atlantic County Library System now offers more language learning opportunities through the Mango Languages online resource. The most recently added languages are Egyptian, modern standard Arabic, Romanian and Swahili. Mango Languages offers nearly 50 world language courses and15 English as a Second Language courses.
Mango users may choose to learn simple, practical skills for common polite, conversational situations or to learn in-depth and comprehensive language and grammar skills. Each language is presented with an appreciation for cultural nuance and real-world application that goes beyond teaching vocabulary to integrate components of grammar and culture. Mango teaches actual conversation, breaking down complex linguistic elements within an audio-visual framework that draws important connections and builds on information the user already has learned.
No special training, downloads or installation are required to use Mango Languages on a home computer. Free iPhone and Android apps are available through the library system.

Tax help available
United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey in Atlantic County is launching the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, an IRS-supported tax preparation service that uses trained volunteers to prepare taxes at no cost for individuals and families with a household income less than $51,000. The program also educates clients on common tax credits, like the EITC and Child Tax Credit, and provides financial advice to help clients get the most out of their return.
This tax season, UWGPSNJ will coordinate five VITA sites throughout Atlantic County: Carnegie Library Center in Atlantic City, Family Success Center in Egg Harbor Township, Public Library in Egg Harbor City, Hammonton Family Success Center in Hammonton and UWGPSNJ in Galloway. Sites are open through tax day, April 15. Appointments are required and can be made by calling 609-404-4483. Raffle tickets available
Three winners will share as much as $15,000 in the 2013 Atlantic Cape Community College Restaurant Gala 50/50 Raffle. The raffle is sponsored by the Atlantic Cape Community College Foundation, and proceeds benefit student scholarships and Atlantic Cape Foundation operations.
Only 300 tickets will be sold at $100 each. Three cash prizes will be awarded, including: $9,000, first prize; $4,500, second prize; and $1,500, third prize. Dollar amounts are based on all 300 tickets being sold. The winning tickets will be drawn at the March 14 Restaurant Gala at Bally’s Atlantic City.

Support group forms
Mount Pleasant Baptist Church will hold support groups called GriefShare for those who have lost loved ones. GriefShare includes a video seminar series featuring some of the nation’s foremost Christian experts on grief and recovery topics as seen from a biblical perspective. The video seminars are combined with support group discussions where participants can share regarding the materials presented in the video and the happenings in their journey of grief.

The Stockton College Education Center will offer a series of one-day professional development courses for K-12 educators through May. The ACFSO is collecting donated new unopened packages of male and female undergarments from children sizes to young adult. The undergarments are to care for the needs of children during a crisis that ends up in an extended hospital stay.

Relay for Life set
The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life will take place June 14 and 15 at Mainland Regional High School, 1301 Oak Ave., Linwood. This overnight event is held to recognize that cancer doesn’t sleep and neither will we until we find the cure. Participants walk around the track to raise money for cancer.
Highlighting the event is the luminaria service, a candlelight vigil held at nightfall to honor survivors and to remember those lost to cancer. Luminaria candles line the track and are left burning throughout the night as a reminder to participants of the importance of their involvement in the Relay For Life event.

Tickets on sale for food event
The organizers of the annual Chefs at the Shore event are making tickets available early specifically for holiday gifts. The 2013 Chefs at the Shore fundraiser is scheduled for 5:30 to 9 p.m. June 20 at Historic Gardner’s Basin, Atlantic City.
The event appeals to “foodies” and environmentalists alike, as it showcases some of the area’s finest food while it funds educational programming at the Atlantic City Aquarium. Teen writing contest set
Gilda’s Club South Jersey is sponsoring its annual teen writing contest, “It’s Always Something,” for students in the ninth to 12th grades. They are looking for personal essays and poetry. Each writing must be honest and speak to how cancer has affected that teen writer’s life.
All writings must be 500 to 1,000 words, double-spaced. One entry per student. The contest deadline is March 15. Winners will be selected by May 10. Both First Place Essay and Poetry winners will receive an Apple iPad. Prizes also will be awarded to second and third place winners in each category

Volunteers are needed for the Ventnor Senior Citizen Transportation Service.
This free shuttle service is available to all senior citizens residing in Ventnor and offers rides to anywhere in the Downbeach area of Ventnor, Margate and Longport. This service is performed by volunteer dispatchers and drivers, who are always needed to support this program.

Restaurant gala set for March
The 30th anniversary Atlantic Cape Community College Restaurant Gala will take place March 14 at Bally’s Atlantic City Hotel and Casino. With the theme “Celebrate the 30 kNights,” the gala will feature Camelot-inspired decor and a feast.
Gala honorees include the Donio and Crescenzo families of Hammonton and Chef Kevin Scull of Egg Harbor Township. The annual fundraiser has raised nearly $3 million for scholarships since 1984. All gala proceeds benefit student scholarships at the Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College and Atlantic Cape Foundation operations.

Sandy Relief Fund established for students
The Atlantic Cape Community College Foundation has established the Sandy Relief Fund for Atlantic Cape Students to collect emergency funds for Atlantic Cape Community College students affected by Hurricane Sandy.
More than 1,900 Atlantic Cape students live on the barrier island communities assaulted by the storm on Oct. 29. Student evacuees are now returning to devastating conditions-wrecked homes and vehicles, and destroyed computer equipment, school supplies and textbooks.
The Sandy Relief Fund for Atlantic Cape Students will provide assistance for students who need to replace books, computer equipment, clothing and food, and to cover commuting costs and other necessities. Senior Center open
The Hammonton Community Senior Citizen Center is open for seniors, age 50 and older, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday and is located in the Canoe Club building off Egg Harbor Road at Park Avenue in Hammonton Lake Park. Recreational activities include card games, a walking group and book club. There are no membership fees or dues. On the third Friday of each month, Atlanticare Regional Medical Center sponsors a free lecture by a health care professional on a subject related directly to senior issues. The talk is followed by a luncheon provided by the Canoe Club Kitchen crew for $3. Bingo is held the fourth Tuesday of each month, followed by a free luncheon.

Upgrade your current skills, gain fresh knowledge and develop new talents in the comfort of your own home by enrolling in online training courses through Atlantic Cape Community College’s Continuing Education division.
Concentrations cover business, grant writing/nonprofits, career ideas, career development, personal enrichment, test preparation, languages, personal finance, personal enrichment, computer applications and more.
Most classes are $99. All students need to get started is Internet access, an email address and Web browser. Each course begins every six weeks and consists of 12 lessons, interactive quizzes, assignments, tutorials and online discussion areas. Reassurance calls offered
The volunteers at CONTACT Cape-Atlantic offer free daily phone calls to say hello and check that all is well to help the disabled, elderly, and isolated citizens of Atlantic and Cape May counties who want to continue living independently. Local cookbooks wanted
Has your church, school, family, community group or civic organization created its own cookbook? If so, the Atlantic County Library System would love to have a copy of it.
Donations of local cookbooks can be dropped off at any Atlantic County Library System location or the Bookmobile. Library branches are located in Brigantine, Egg Harbor City, Egg Harbor Township, Galloway Township, Hammonton, Longport, Mays Landing, Pleasantville, Somers Point and Ventnor. Library offers app
The new Atlantic County Library System app puts the library in your pocket. You can quickly and easily search the library catalog, check your record, renew the things you have checked out, and put items on hold with the app. Wherever you are, downloading audiobooks and eBooks; locating, calling or emailing a library branch; or accessing the library’s calendar of events, Facebook or Twitter pages are simple to do.

Family readiness group formed
The 150th/160th Engineer Company, New Jersey Army National Guard unit out of Hammonton has officially formed a Family Readiness Group to support the soldiers and families within the unit. The following positions were filled: Leader Wanda Tarquinio of Vineland, Secretary Janet Wilson of Mount Laurel, Treasurer Patricia Christensen of Tuckerton, and Special Events, Jennifer Freeman of Pleasantville.

Head Start enrolling preschoolers
The Atlantic Human Resources, Inc. Head Start and Early Head Start program is recruiting preschool children for the 2012-13 program. There is no cost to families who qualify.

Pulmonary support group formed
An evening support group is being formed in the Atlantic County area for residents with lung and related pulmonary disease in need of camaraderie and friendship.

MS group seeks members
The Jersey Shore MS support group is trying to reform, and is looking for people involved with MS who would like a forum. The group meets from 6 to 8 p.m. the first Tuesday of every month (not in summer) at the Galloway branch of the Atlantic County Library System on Jimmie Leeds Road.

Therapeutic riding program accepting riders
A therapeutic horseback riding program in Egg Harbor Township is accepting riders.
HEARTS TRC, LLC, is a NARHA/PATH member center providing therapeutic assisted equine activities. Sue Adams has created a new curriculum, “From the Ground Up,” exclusive to HEARTS TRC, which brings new and skills to all of its riders. Adams and the HEARTS TRC partners have more than 50 years of combined experience working with children and adults who are challenged physically, mentally, psychologically and socially. They also are experienced teaching riders without disabilities. Sessions cover care of the horse, equine anatomy, psychology of the horse, and training techniques. Techniques to be introduced also include equine massage and healing through touch, to relieve stress, pain, and create relaxation within the horse.

Food bank also needs baby items
The Emergency Assistance Pantry at the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, Southern Branch, is in need of baby formula and disposable diapers for its clients. The pantry serves 2,600 families each month and is located at the West Entrance of the Shore Mall at the former site of Value City. For information, call 609-383-8843, ext. 120.
The Community FoodBank of New Jersey-Southern Branch, serves Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and southern Burlington counties. The FoodBank has seen a 60 percent increase in need since 2008.
Mental Health Association reaching out to veterans
The Mental Health Association in Atlantic County is reaching out to OIF/OEF military veterans through a self-help group called MHAAC Veterans Network. It’s about veterans helping other veterans through a member-run group process. In addition to MHAAC traditional services, this veterans group will offer education, advocacy and support.
While this group was formed to exclusively address the special needs of Atlantic County’s Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom veterans and their families, other veterans groups also are planned. MHAAC, in conjunction with Richard Stockton College undergraduate and graduate social work programs are planning to hold meetings for Vietnam era, post 9-11, and Korean War veterans as well as topics addressing issues such as HIV and hepatitis C among veterans.
