Undergarments wanted

The ACFSO is collecting donated new unopened packages of male and female undergarments from children sizes to young adult. The undergarments are to care for the needs of children during a crisis that ends up in an extended hospital stay. Donations can be dropped off at the Northfield Office, 950 Tilton Road, Suite 108. All donations will be going to Bridgeton Hospital.

Relay for Life set

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life will be held June 14 and 15 at Mainland Regional High School, 1301 Oak Ave., Linwood. This overnight event is held to recognize that cancer doesn’t sleep.

Participants walk around the track to raise money for cancer.

Highlighting the event is the luminaria service, a candlelight vigil held at nightfall to honor survivors and to remember those lost to cancer. Luminaria candles line the track and are left burning throughout the night as a reminder to participants the importance of their involvement in the Relay For Life event.

College offers pastry classes

The Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College offers amateur pastry chefs the opportunity to learn how to prepare confectionery creations through an assortment of dessert workshops this spring.

Careme’s open for spring

Careme’s, the student-run, gourmet restaurant at the Academy of Culinary Arts, is open for the spring semester. Careme’s is located at Atlantic Cape Community College’s Mays Landing Campus, 5100 Black Horse Pike.

Under the direction of a chef educator, culinary students will prepare lunch and dinner buffets for $14.95 per person through Feb. 11. ACA’s student-chefs also make all dessert pastries, breads and rolls. Careme’s is open Monday through Friday, September to December and January to May, when classes are in session. College hosts access program

Teen arts academy offered

Teens who are interested in the visual and performing arts are invited to participate in free workshops on Saturdays in February as part of the Atlantic County Teen Arts Academy.

The goal is to provide area young people with greater arts education opportunities and to enhance skills needed in preparation for college or a professional program. The Teen Arts Academy is a collaborative effort of the Hammonton Arts Center, Richard Stockton College, the Noyes Museum/Stockton College, Atlantic Cape Community College, Cygnus Creative Arts Center, and the Atlantic County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs in addition to others.

Kickoff for cancer event

The Kickoff Celebration for American Cancer Society Relay for Life will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 27 at Center Court at the Hamilton Mall, 4403 Black Horse Pike, Mays Landing.

Learn more about the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Linwood, an overnight celebration scheduled for June 14 to 15. This year’s theme is Colors of Hope. Chili cooks wanted

The Knights of Columbus All Saints Council will sponsor its 11th annual John J. Heinz Memorial Chili Cook-Off and Dinner from 4 to7 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Annex at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Wabash and Poplar avenues in Linwood.

Electric company donates to Arc

Atlantic City Electric presented a $44,000 donation to The Arc of Atlantic County during an open house and retirement celebration of long-time Arc CEO Deborah Davies. Through its seventh annual Charity Golf Classic, Atlantic City Electric donated $132,000 in 2012 to nonprofit organizations including The Arc; Gateway Community Action Partnership; and Special Olympics New Jersey.

Singers wanted

The Mainland Choral Society is inviting singers to join in rehearsals for their 25th anniversary spring concert, “Songs of Hope and Encouragement,” on May 3.

CASA program set

Det. John Ioia from the New Jersey State Police Gang Unit will speak at CASA for Children’s annual Winter Forum from 9:30 a.m. to noon Jan. 26 at the Atlantic County Library in Egg Harbor Township.

College offers test prep courses

Richard Stockton College offers test preparation courses for students who wish to pursue an advanced degree or gain admission to law school. The courses provide preparation for most of the required entry tests including GMAT, GRE or LSAT tests.

Playwriting workshop scheduled

The Eagle Theatre will offer a multi-session workshop for those interested in learning about the craft of playwriting Feb. 2 to April 27 at the Theatre, 208 Vine St., Hammonton. It is open to anyone 16 and older.

The workshop is designed to familiarize participants with the major structural elements of dramatic form, and guide them toward writing their own one-act play. The workshop will be directed by John Perovich. Perovich is a theater artist from Mays Landing, an adjunct professor in the School of Arts and Humanities at Richard Stockton College, and has taught playwriting, acting, and dramatic literature courses.

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will have the chance to see their own original one-act plays performed at a public event at the Eagle Theatre. The total cost for all seven sessions of the workshop is $45. For more information or to register, call 609-704-5012.

Poetry workshop slated

The Eagle Theatre will hold a beginner-to-intermediate level poetry workshop beginning at 7 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Theatre, 208 Vine St., Hammonton.

The workshop will take place on a bi-weekly basis from Jan. 30 until May 8 for a total of eight sessions, meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesdays. During each session, writers will give feedback on the work of others, as well as receive critiques on their work from fellow members of the workshop. There will also be discussion on various elements of craft and poetic technique.

This poetry workshop will be co-directed by Dave Murphy and Eagle Theatre manager Scott Van Pelt. Murphy, a resident of Hammonton, has taught English for over 30 years. He has also participated in many poetry and prose workshops, events, and readings, including Peter Murphy’s annual Poets and Writers Getaway in Cape May, the poetry programs of the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, advanced writing seminars with Pulitzer Prize winning poet Stephen Dunn and the creative writing workshops of the Artist Teacher Institute. A recipient of three National Endowment for the Humanities grants, Murphy has published a “handful of articles and poems,” is working on longer prose works, and continues to teach, read, and write poetry.

Concert scheduled

Music full of myth and fable by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Igor Stravinsky, and American composer and percussionist Charles DeLancey will make up the program for the Bay-Atlantic Symphony’s next concert series.

The concert will take place at 2 p.m. Jan. 27 at the Richard Stockton College Performing Arts Center, Jimmie Leeds Road, Galloway Township.

Rutgers offers environmental steward training

The 2013 class of Rutgers Cooperative Extension’s Environmental Steward training will be offered in Atlantic County from January to June.

The curriculum is designed to introduce non-scientists to the science underlying key environmental issues in the Garden State. Authorities from academia are joined by colleagues from government and the nonprofit sector to share understanding and insights with the students.

Electric company to donate smoke alarms

Atlantic City Electric will donate 1,080 smoke alarms to fire marshals in southern New Jersey as part of the company’s Emergency Services Partnership Program. The smoke alarms will be dispersed in January to eight counties within Atlantic City Electric’s service area. The donation provides resources for county fire marshals who give the smoke alarms to New Jersey residents who need them.

The donation includes 80 smoke alarms designed to help protect residents who are hard of hearing. These smoke alarms emit a bright strobe light and high-decibel audible alarm to alert people to the presence of smoke.

Harris Communications of Minnesota and Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse provided the donated alarms at a reduced cost. Since 2000, Atlantic City Electric has donated 21,300 smoke alarms and 720 special needs smoke alarms to fire safety officials in southern New Jersey.

Scholarship available

The Vincent S. Haneman-Joseph B. Perskie Scholarship is awarded annually to Atlantic County law students who are admitted to an American Bar Association-accredited law school. The award is based on academic ability, financial need, leadership potential and character. Low-cost pet neutering program available

Spaces are available now for the state’s Low Cost Spay/Neuter Program for pets, available to qualified residents. The program helps qualified residents spay or neuter their pets for as little as $10.

To qualify for the $10 cost, residents must receive one of the following: food stamps, Medicaid, general public assistance, rental assistance, aid to families with dependent children, Lifeline Utility Credit, Tenants Lifeline Assistance, Supplemental Security Income, or Pharmaceutical Assistance to Aged and Disabled. Tickets on sale for food event

The organizers of the annual Chefs at the Shore event are making tickets available early specifically for holiday gifts. The 2013 Chefs at the Shore fundraiser is scheduled for 5:30 to 9 p.m. June 20 at Historic Gardner’s Basin, Atlantic City.

The event appeals to “foodies” and environmentalists alike, as it showcases some of the area’s finest food while it funds educational programming at the Atlantic City Aquarium. Proceeds from the event also are used to fund chef educational programs and scholarships for culinary students for the Professional Chefs Association.

Chefs at the Shore tickets are $50 before June 1 and $60 after that date. Guests may purchase a block of ten for $450. Triathlon/duathlon set

The annual CONTACT Cape-Atlantic Triathlon/Duathlon is taking place through Feb. 18.

Participants have a month to complete the event: a 2.4-mile swim in a pool, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26-mile run. Triathletes do all three events. Duathletes do two events.

The registration donation is $30 and is co-sponsored by the Ocean City Aquatic and Fitness Center. Competitors can substitute gym events for the swimming, biking and running events by documenting how many laps they swim or aquasize classes they take for the swim leg of the triathlon; how many miles they bike, step or row for the bicycling portion; and how many miles they walk/run, use the elliptical or take aerobics classes for the marathon section. Everyone who enters receives a T-shirt, and everyone who finishes will receive an award. A list of triathlon finishers will be posted and an awards ceremony will take place Feb. 23 at the Ocean City Aquatic and Fitness Center, 18th and Simpson Avenue, Ocean City.

The triathlon is a fundraiser for CONTACT Cape-Atlantic, a nonprofit volunteer group that makes daily telephone reassurance calls to the elderly and disabled in Atlantic and Cape May counties. Teen writing contest set

Gilda’s Club South Jersey is sponsoring its annual teen writing contest, “It’s Always Something,” for students in the ninth to 12th grades. They are looking for personal essays and poetry. Each writing must be honest and speak to how cancer has affected that teen writer’s life.

All writings must be 500 to 1,000 words, double-spaced. One entry per student. The contest deadline is March 15. Winners will be selected by May 10. Both First Place Essay and Poetry winners will receive an Apple iPad. Prizes also will be awarded to second and third place winners in each category

Restaurant collecting for storm victims

W.L. Goodfellows and Co. Restaurant and Pub in Galloway Township invites everyone to make a donation to “Goodfellows For Shore” to help South Jersey neighbors ravaged by Hurricane Sandy. All funds collected will be used to deliver food and supplies to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, Southern Branch.

Volunteers needed for senior shuttle

Volunteers are needed for the Ventnor Senior Citizen Transportation Service.

This free shuttle service is available to all senior citizens residing in Ventnor and offers rides to anywhere in the Downbeach area of Ventnor, Margate and Longport. This service is performed by volunteer dispatchers and drivers, who are always needed to support this program.

Restaurant gala set for March

The 30th anniversary Atlantic Cape Community College Restaurant Gala will take place March 14 at Bally’s Atlantic City Hotel and Casino. With the theme “Celebrate the 30 kNights,” the gala will feature Camelot-inspired decor and a feast.

Gala honorees include the Donio and Crescenzo families of Hammonton and Chef Kevin Scull of Egg Harbor Township. The annual fundraiser has raised nearly $3 million for scholarships since 1984. All gala proceeds benefit student scholarships at the Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College and Atlantic Cape Foundation operations.

Atlantic Cape Community College will offer information technology certifications, including career training and IT professional series courses, in 2013.

Computer System Support and Analyst Technician enhances the Computer Technical Solution Series by focusing on the principles of desktop and network management beginning Jan. 28.

Certified Ethical Hacker training allows students the opportunity to review the processes and tools hackers use to exploit systems and learn how to deploy effective countermeasures to prevent malicious attacks beginning Feb. 12.

In Microsoft Certified IT Professional, students learn how to set up and maintain network infrastructure services and learn how to secure a network environment using industry standard technologies, beginning June 3.

Computer Repair Technician (A+ Certification) prepares students to work with the latest hardware technologies, including: RAID, Serial Attached SCSI, USB and Peripheral Component Interconnect Express beginning June 3.

College offers casino games training

The Casino Career Institute at Atlantic Cape Community College has prepared more than 50,000 people for careers in casino games and continues to offer training for those who wish to enter the profession.

The Half the Time at Half the Price Program offers table games professionals an opportunity to increase their value and marketability to employers by learning a new game in a short-term, low-cost program. CCI table games alumni who have graduated more than three years ago can refresh their skills as they return to the gaming workforce with an Alumni Refresher Program. Graduates may take the refresher program course only for the games they previously have taken with CCI. Alumni who have graduated from CCI within the past three years can revive their skills with the Alumni Practice Program.

Classes include: introduction to casino games-blackjack, craps, baccarat, poker, pai gow tiles, roulette and pai gow poker.

Atlantic Cape Community College is accepting scholarship applications for the 2013-14 academic year. Atlantic Cape offers merit- and need-based scholarships for students who are continuing their studies at Atlantic Cape or transferring to another college in the fall 2013 semester.

The deadline to file a scholarship application is Feb. 8. Eligible students must submit an application, two letters of recommendation from faculty members and an essay that describes one’s personal and professional goals.

Scholarship recipients will be notified in April, and are invited to attend Atlantic Cape’s Scholarship Awards Ceremony on May 20. Jazz Society seeks sponsors

Sandy Relief Fund established for students

The Atlantic Cape Community College Foundation has established the Sandy Relief Fund for Atlantic Cape Students to collect emergency funds for Atlantic Cape Community College students affected by Hurricane Sandy.

More than 1,900 Atlantic Cape students live on the barrier island communities assaulted by the storm on Oct. 29. Student evacuees are now returning to devastating conditions-wrecked homes and vehicles, and destroyed computer equipment, school supplies and textbooks.

The Sandy Relief Fund for Atlantic Cape Students will provide assistance for students who need to replace books, computer equipment, clothing and food, and to cover commuting costs and other necessities. Senior Center open

The Hammonton Community Senior Citizen Center is open for seniors, age 50 and older, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday and is located in the Canoe Club building off Egg Harbor Road at Park Avenue in Hammonton Lake Park. Recreational activities include card games, a walking group and book club. There are no membership fees or dues. On the third Friday of each month, Atlanticare Regional Medical Center sponsors a free lecture by a health care professional on a subject related directly to senior issues. The talk is followed by a luncheon provided by the Canoe Club Kitchen crew for $3. Bingo is held the fourth Tuesday of each month, followed by a free luncheon.

Health courses offered

The Health Professions Institute at Atlantic Cape Community College offers programs for health care professionals interested in advancing their skills.

Emergency Medical Technician Certification will prepare students to perform basic life support. Participants will learn adult and pediatric medical and trauma assessment, basic airway support, use of AED, assisting patients with medication administration, splinting, bleeding control, lifting, transferring and transporting stretchers and patients. It will take place from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Tuesday and Friday, and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, beginning Jan. 29.

Multi-Skill Technician will prepare students to function as EKG and Phlebotomy Technicians. Curriculum includes: anatomy and physiology of the heart, medical terminology, medical disease processes and appropriate treatments, medical ethics. The class will meet from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday and Friday, beginning March 4.

In Administrative Health-Care Specialist, participants will learn a variety of administrative duties in the offices of physicians, podiatrists, chiropractors, dentists and other health care facilities. The class will meet from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and 8 a.m.to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, beginning March 11.

Lecture and lab modules will take place at the Health Professions Institute at Atlantic Cape’s Worthington Atlantic City Campus, 1535 Bacharach Blvd. Clinical expertise will come from various hospital settings and students will also gain field experience on paramedic units.

Golden Cotillion planned

The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. Iota Chapter will introduce a Golden Cotillion in spring 2013.

The Golden Cotillion, “Lovelier the Second Time Around,” will feature women 60 and older. It will provide an opportunity for mature ladies to experience relevant workshops and an evening of dining, dancing and fun. Ladies are sought to participate. A sponsorship fee will be required. Sponsors may be individuals, civic organizations, social clubs, or churches. The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. Iota Chapter has been the sponsor of the Debutante Cotillion for high school seniors for more than 50 years. The benefits of this cotillion have enabled the chapter presenting scholarships each of these years. The two cotillions will continue to benefit Iota’s Scholarship Fund and the sorority’s Youth Programs.

Reassurance calls offered

The volunteers at CONTACT Cape-Atlantic offer free daily phone calls to say hello and check that all is well to help the disabled, elderly, and isolated citizens of Atlantic and Cape May counties who want to continue living independently. Family readiness group formed

The 150th/160th Engineer Company, New Jersey Army National Guard unit out of Hammonton has officially formed a Family Readiness Group to support the soldiers and families within the unit. Head Start enrolling preschoolers

The Atlantic Human Resources, Inc. Head Start and Early Head Start program is recruiting preschool children for the 2012-13 program. There is no cost to families who qualify.

Pulmonary support group formed

An evening support group is being formed in the Atlantic County area for residents with lung and related pulmonary disease in need of camaraderie and friendship.

MS group seeks members

Therapeutic riding program accepting riders

A therapeutic horseback riding program in Egg Harbor Township is accepting riders.

HEARTS TRC, LLC, is a NARHA/PATH member center providing therapeutic assisted equine activities. Sue Adams has created a new curriculum, “From the Ground Up,” exclusive to HEARTS TRC, which brings new and skills to all of its riders. Adams and the HEARTS TRC partners have more than 50 years of combined experience working with children and adults who are challenged physically, mentally, psychologically and socially. They also are experienced teaching riders without disabilities. Sessions cover care of the horse, equine anatomy, psychology of the horse, and training techniques. Techniques to be introduced also include equine massage and healing through touch, to relieve stress, pain, and create relaxation within the horse.

Food bank also needs baby items

The Emergency Assistance Pantry at the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, Southern Branch, is in need of baby formula and disposable diapers for its clients. The pantry serves 2,600 families each month and is located at the West Entrance of the Shore Mall at the former site of Value City. For information, call 609-383-8843, ext. 120.

The Community FoodBank of New Jersey-Southern Branch, serves Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and southern Burlington counties. The FoodBank has seen a 60 percent increase in need since 2008.

Mental Health Association reaching out to veterans

The Mental Health Association in Atlantic County, or MHAAC, is reaching out to OIF/OEF military veterans through a self-help group called MHAAC Veterans Network. It’s all about veterans helping other veterans through a member-run group process. In addition to MHAAC traditional services, this veterans group will offer education, advocacy and support.

While this group was formed to exclusively address the special needs of Atlantic County’s Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom veterans and their families, other veterans groups also are planned. MHAAC, in conjunction with Richard Stockton College undergraduate and graduate social work programs are planning to hold meetings for Vietnam era, post 9-11, and Korean War veterans as well as topics addressing issues such as HIV and hepatitis C among veterans.
