Atlantic Cape Community College offers students an opportunity to earn college credits in only 11 days. Classes will meet online and at the Mays Landing Campus, 5100 Black Horse Pike.

Support group helps young storm survivors
New Jersey Hope and Healing presents Small Sandy Survivors, a creative workshop that offers support and education to children ages 5-10 who were affected by Hurricane Sandy.
The program helps children better understand and cope with the effects of the storm. Counselors are on hand to meet with parents during the workshop. There are fun activities, interactive and free. New Jersey Hope and Healing is sponsored by the New Jersey Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services, Disaster and Terrorism Branch, through a FEMA grant in partnership with Mental Health Association in NJ.

Classes offered for seniors
Atlantic Cape Community College’s Club 50 Plus will offer workshops this summer designed to enhance the personal, professional and social lives of older learners.
Introduction to the Personal Computer for Seniors will guide participants through computer basics. This course will also cover a brief introduction to the Internet, five Fridays, beginning June 8 (no class on July 5).
Learn to Play Blackjack will teach participants the basics of Blackjack, including: hit, stand, double down, split and surrender. Hand signals and what bust, win/lose, push and natural mean will also be reviewed, two Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning June 11.
Exploring the World via the Internet for Seniors will help participants learn about using email, sending digital pictures and greeting cards, searching for people and maps on the Web, and researching information about health issues, travel, shopping, coupons and more online, two Fridays, beginning July 19.
Manage, Edit and Email Your Photographs will prepare participants to move images from a digital camera to a computer, then edit and resize pictures for use on the Web or email. Students should bring to class a digital camera and a USB cable to connect to the computer, two sections beginning July 11 and Aug. 9.

TD Charitable Foundation supports JFS
The TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, recently donated a total of $5,000 to Jewish Family Service of Atlantic and Cape May Counties as part of the bank’s commitment to giving back to the community.
This funding supports the ongoing efforts of the Jewish Family Service Economic Response Center in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The ERC team provides counseling and economic assistance to families who are impacted by the storm or economic decline. Services include linkages, pro bono and financial assistance as well as counseling and mental health services for individuals and families coping in hard economic times.

Atlantic Cape Community College will offer professional development workshops beginning in June for individuals interested in enhancing their skill sets and advancing their careers.
Sanitation Training/ServSafe will teach participants to recognize the responsibilities involving the prevention of food-borne illnesses to pass the ServSafe test. Foodservice workers will learn the importance of proper storage, food preparation, cleaning and sanitizing to ensure safe food handling, four Fridays beginning June 7.
Real Estate Broker Licensing: Ethics in Today’s Real Estate World is one of a series of three courses required to complete 150 hours of pre-licensure education to apply for the broker’s license in New Jersey, four Thursdays and Fridays beginning June 20.
Beginning Italian will teach participants useful words, phrases and expressions common to everyday life, business and travel situations, eight Wednesdays beginning June 12.
Exploring Digital SLR Photography 1 offers an overview of shutter speeds, f stops, ISO, composition, lighting, sports photography and more, three Mondays beginning June 10.

Railway society holding open houses
Members of the South Jersey Garden Railway Society will host open houses at various locations in South Jersey, weather permitting, June 1 from 10 to 3 p.m. The rain date is June 8.
Garden railways are large-scale model trains that run outside. Each layout is a unique experience and visitors are welcome to tour as many as they can. There is no admission fee. Information and directions to the SJGRS Open Houses can be found at trainweb.org/sjgrs.
Golf tournament, book club luncheon set
Absecon Lighthouse’s annual golf tournament will take place June 7 at McCullough’s Emerald Golf Links in Egg Harbor Township.
Registration is 12:30 p.m. and tee time is 1:30 p.m. In the spirit of supporting educational programming at the lighthouse, a Book Club Luncheon will take place simultaneously at the all-new Library III at McCullough’s at 1:30 p.m. The golf package is $100 per person and includes green fees and cart, lunch, a DO AC golf cap, tee package, prizes, awards banquet, and a future round of discounted golf at McCullough’s. Aquarium celebrating Memorial Day Weekend
The Atlantic City Aquarium will host daily dive and animal shows May 25-27.
Each day starts with a live diver feeding show at 11 a.m. The diver will interact with stingrays and other residents of the 25,000-gallon tank. At noon and 3 p.m., it’s feeding time for the juvenile cownose rays and bat rays. Visitors can hand feed these species by purchasing cups of food for $2 for non-members and $1 for members. At 2 p.m., visitors can get close to the aquarium’s more unusual inhabitants, like its Rose Hair Tarantula, a boa constrictor or a Sulcata Tortoise, at the Exotic Animal Show.

Volunteers to receive recognition
On June 4, Lt. Gov. Kim Guadano will present the Governor’s Jefferson Awards for Volunteerism to three longtime volunteers from Catholic Charities.
Kay Noble, Patty Bivens and Virginia Brannigan were nominated for having “forever changed the paths of countless Atlantic County residents through their tireless work at Catholic Charities’ Family and Community Services Center in Atlantic County” The three spend many hours each week sorting donations and running Gracie’s Thrift Shop.
The ceremony will take place at the Newark Museum. This award honors “volunteer efforts that achieve measurable community impact and represent outstanding acts of public service without the expectation of recognition or compensation. Recipients demonstrate unique vision, dedication and tenacity of heroic proportion and serve as inspiration for others to respond to the call to action.”
Financial planning seminar offered for seniors
The Stockton Center on Successful Aging will sponsor a free informational seminar on financial planning for older adults on May 30.
The event, Setting Goals and Priorities: Choose Your Financial Destination, runs from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. at the Hammonton Canoe Club Senior Center, 100 Sports Drive in Hammonton. The information will be presented by representatives of Money Management International, a nonprofit financial education institution. In this program attendees will learn how to establish personal financial goals, prioritize the goals and monitor progress on the achievement of the goals. A financial workbook will be provided to all attendees.

Atlantic Cape offering kids’ cooking classes
Atlantic Cape Community College's Academy of Culinary Arts will offer Kids in the Kitchen cooking sessions for children ages 8-12 through the summer.
The classes are designed to help young chefs build skills and confidence in the kitchen, and will teach kitchen safety and an understanding of healthy cooking while giving participants a chance to make friends and have fun. The class costs $195 and includes hat and apron.

Keates Fund scholarships available
AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center City Campus Auxiliary is awarding fellowship funds to qualifying applicants pursuing nursing education through its Martha B. Keates Fellowship Fund for nursing students. Funds will be applied toward tuition fees or book purchases and other appropriate educational expenses as determined by the Martha B. Keates Nursing Fellowship Fund Committee.
Applicants must live in Atlantic County, be high school graduates enrolling or currently enrolled in a nursing program or have completed the pre-requisites of a nursing program. Children and grandchildren of ARMC Auxiliary members are not eligible.

Medical society offers scholarships
The Atlantic County Medical Society will offer scholarship money to medical students who are accepted to or are attending an accredited medical school. Applicants must be residents of Atlantic County.
Since 1970, the society has awarded $604,000 in scholarship money to 98 medical students. Applications are available online at acms-cmcms.org or by request to firstname.lastname@example.org. The deadline for applications is June 15.
Smooth jazz for scholarships at Boneyard
The Smooth Jazz for Scholarship series brings smooth jazz to the musical menu at the Boneyard Bar and Grill in Atlantic City for Memorial Day weekend.
The first installment of the newly-created benefit concert series will showcase emerging regional smooth jazz talent. The Smooth Jazz for Scholarship series will take place on the last Sunday of each month and a portion of the proceeds from each ticket will benefit the Atlantic Cape Foundation of Atlantic Cape Community College. The May 26 event will be co-headlined by husband and wife, vocalist Shiron Denise and trumpeter WoJamm.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for shows at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., and food and drink specials will be offered all evening. Tickets are $20 for general admission in advance or $25 at the door. VIP tickets are available for $40 and include early 5 p.m. entry, a meet and greet, complimentary appetizers and an autographed CD.

Teens win state scholarship pageant
Gianna Mazzone, 16, of Somers Point (senior division), and Madison Kennelly, 14, of Ocean City (junior division) captured the state crowns recently when Ocean City hosted the 42nd annual New Jersey National Teenager Scholarship Pageant. Julia Wilson, of Ocean City, was crowned Miss Hospitality for her support of the pageant.
Forty of New Jersey’s brightest teens vied for top honors in events including application, interview, gown and expression/style, which featured contestants wearing jeans they personally decorated in a style that showcased their creativity and individuality. The girls will represent New Jersey at the national competition this summer in San Antonio, Texas.
Miss Night in Venice seeking charities in need of donations
The Miss Night in Venice Committee is accepting requests from charities.
Each year, the proceeds raised by Miss Night in Venice contestants are awarded to charity. Ms. New Jersey Senior America Pageant set
Harrah’s Resort Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City will host the Ms. New Jersey Senior America Pageant at 1 p.m. June 4 in the Concert Venue Theater.
Contestants are judged in four categories: Interview, Philosophy of Life, Evening Gown and Talent. Upon winning the state title, the queen becomes the delegate from New Jersey who will compete in the national pageant, to be held at Harrah’s in October.
The pageant includes performances by the contestants, a Motown Medley by the Great Dames Chorus, and climaxes with outgoing Queen Carol Dugan, who will deliver her farewell address, sing and crown this year’s winner. Library expands computer training schedule
The Atlantic City Free Public Library has instituted changes to its computer training program to make taking classes easier.
First, pre-registration is no longer required. The classes, which are open to Atlantic City Library card holders, are now on a first-come, first-served basis. Those interested in attending are asked to bring their Atlantic City Library card to class. There also are more class sessions. The schedule features six to seven sessions per month.
Job Skills Basics: Monday, June 3, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Learn how and where to search for jobs on the Internet, strategies to get a job and practice filling out a sample online job application.
Microsoft Word Basics: Tuesday, May 28, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Monday, June 24, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Learn how to create, edit, save and print Word documents by making a resume. Resume templates will be provided.

Auxiliary presents $475,000 donation to medical center
The Shore Medical Center Auxiliary celebrated a successful fundraising year, making a $475,000 donation to Shore Medical Center Board of Trustees Chairman Gerald J. Corcoran, Esq., and Shore Medical Center Foundation Chairman James Fraser on April 18 at the Crab Trap in Somers Point.
The auxiliary is the medical center’s original fundraising organization, with a legacy dating back to Shore’s founding in 1940. The donation is part of the auxiliary’s $2.5 million pledge to the Shore Tomorrow campaign, which helped fund the construction of Shore’s state-of-the-art Surgical Pavilion and Campus Expansion. Over the past 40 years, the auxiliary has contributed more than $11 million in support of Shore.
During Thursday’s event, Pat Crowley, of Ocean City, was presented with the New Jersey Hospital Association Catalyst of the Year Award. Also recognized were members of the Women’s Golf Tournament Organizing Committee, which has staged the event for 20 years and will hand off responsibility for the tournament after this year. Kramer to speak at Congregation Beth Judah
On May 25, Stephen J. Kramer will return to Congregation Beth Judah to speak on “Prospect for Peace in the Middle East.”
Kramer, the Jewish Times columnist of “Israel Viewpoint” and author of “Encountering Israel,” will speak during Shabbat morning services. More than 20 years ago, Kramer and his family made aliyah to Israel. His writing reflects his feelings about life in Israel, where he has traveled extensively. Family Fun Day set in Brigantine
The City of Brigantine and the Brigantine Community Presbyterian Church will present the third annual Brigantine Community Family Fun Day on July 6, with a rain date of July 7.
The parade is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. from the 26th Street Recreation Complex and will march to the 15th Street Complex. The festivities will begin as soon as the parade arrives and will continue until 9 p.m. The activities at 15th Street will include musical entertainment, amusement rides, games for the children, strolling entertainers, local talent, games of chance, local organizations selling their wares and food.
Local organizations and businesses are invited to participate in Family Fun Day 2013 by setting up booths for games/activities, selling items and preparing and selling food. Commitments from organizations are due by June 12. Please indicate what type of food you want to sell or what games you want to run or what items you want to sell. Stockton’s Kramer Hall offers discounted summer courses
Richard Stockton College’s Hammonton instructional site, Kramer Hall, will offer discounted classes this summer.
Stockton’s eight summer sessions, which start in May, June and July, are open to students enrolled in degree programs, non-matriculated students and students currently enrolled at other institutions. A summer tuition discount for undergraduate courses is offered. Students can save more than $300 for each four-credit undergraduate course. Courses in communication disorders, education, language and general studies are offered at Kramer Hall, 30 Front St.

Golf event to benefit education foundation
The Ralph W. Martin Education Foundation will hold its annual golf tournament on June 2 at the Mays Landing Golf Club.
The tournament is the main fundraiser for the foundation, which assists students and programs at Absegami, Oakcrest and Cedar Creek high schools. The tournament honors Ralph W. Martin, the first employee of the Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School District, who served as business administrator for 37 years.
The event will begin with an 8 a.m. registration and 9 a.m. tee-off. The cost is $90 per golfer, which includes golf, continental breakfast and lunch buffet. Non-golfers can purchase a lunch buffet for $25. The cost of hole sponsorship is $100 or three holes for $200. A tournament sponsorship for $500 includes entry fees for two golfers. A foundation scholarship for $1,000 includes entry for a foursome. Prizes include the Foreman Cup-low gross, low net, longest drive-closest to pin, scramble format, and door prizes.

ACPD offers medication drop
The Atlantic City Police Department is one of several in the state to participate in Project Medicine Drop, police said, and officials encourage Atlantic County residents to use the program to safely get rid of old medications.
The program lets people dispose anonymously of unused and expired medications, at any time, at drop boxes in the headquarters of participating police departments. The drop boxes accept solid pharmaceuticals including pills, capsules, patches, inhalers and pet medications. They cannot accept syringes or liquids. Police maintain custody of the deposited drugs, and dispose of them using normal procedures; they also make a quarterly report to the Division of Consumer Affairs about the quantity of drugs turned in.
State Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa said he encourages all Atlantic County residents check their medicine cabinets for expired or unneeded drugs, and bring them to the ACPD drop box, which is available around the clock every day. Atlantic City Police Chief Ernest Jubilee said his agency was pleased to participate in the project.
Luncheon to honor military personnel
Members of the military, active and veteran, will be honored by the Cape Atlantic Christian Womens Connection.
A luncheon at L’s Restaurant in Corbin City at 11:30 a.m. June 12 will pay homage to those who serve and have served in any branch of the military. There will be a special guest appearance by Gen. George Vogel, chief of Chaplain Service at the Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in Long Beach, Calif.

Buena Regional High School student Danielle Banas recently was recognized by U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo, R-2nd, as the winner of the 2013 Congressional Art Competition. Her piece, “Contemplative Blue,” will be displayed in Washington, D.C., in the tunnel connecting the Cannon House Office Building and the U.S. Capitol for one year.

Mrs. New Jersey America seeks entrants
The Mrs. New Jersey America Organization is accepting applications for the 2013 Mrs. New Jersey competition June 22-23 at Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City.

Entrants must be at least 18, married, a U.S. citizen and a resident of New Jersey for at least three months (exceptions for military). No pageant experience is necessary. Open call for short films
The Noyes Museum of Art of Richard Stockton College is holding an open call for film shorts for the Noyes Independent Film Series, which consists of three festivals: the Hammonton Outdoor Film Fest on July 18, the Noyes Independent Film Festival on Nov. 16 and the Noyes Atlantic City Film Festival in spring 2014.
Films will be chosen from original works that have never been shown, works by young independent filmmakers ages 18-20, and films that have been previously screened. Submissions should be between 2 and 60 minutes long. The deadline for submissions is July 1.

Lee to speak at Atlantic Cape

Rotary Club seeks host families in Oakcrest area
The Mays Landing Rotary Club is sponsoring a Rotary Youth Exchange student during the 2013-14 school year. This student will attend Oakcrest High School.
This year, the student is expected to be a boy from Germany. He will be between 15½ and 18 years old when he arrives at the end of August. He will spend his junior or senior year of high school learning a new language in a new country.
The Rotary program is to have a family host a student for about 3½ months, so three families will host the student during his exchange school year. Students must follow a defined set of rules, which they acknowledge before departing their home country. They have an allowance of $90 per month supplied by the Rotary Club and have expectations of family financial support from home for things such as clothing.
The host family must live in an area that attends Oakcrest High School. The family is expected to provide a place to sleep and meals including lunch for the student. A shared room is fine; students do not have to have a bedroom of their own. There also should be a place to study. They should be treated the same as any other family member with respect to chores. They agree in advance that it is their responsibility to adjust to the host family and they do not expect to be treated as a guest. They are expected to successfully pass their courses in high school.
Families with children, families without children, dual parent families and single parent families are all acceptable. All applicants for hosting will have an application taken that includes an in-home interview and a background check will be run.

Artists wanted for Boardwalk show
The Atlantic City Arts Commission and Noyes Museum of Art of Richard Stockton College invite all artists to the DoArtAC.com Boardwalk Art Show, a revival of the tradition of Boardwalk art shows, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 7 on the Atlantic City Boardwalk.
The event is free and all proceeds from the event will be used for future art events in Atlantic City. All artwork must be original and created by the artist registering for the show. Group offered for substance abusers
The Presbyterian Church at Hammonton has created a group to offer hope and support to those with a family member struggling with substance abuse. This group provides a safe, confidential gathering place where stories are heard without judgment. It is a place for those who have watched loved ones struggle with addiction.
The parents, guardians, spouses, children and others affected by family members who struggle with suspected or confirmed substance abuse can find and offer support and learn more about addiction. The group offers hope and the knowledge that we are not alone.

Free vacations offered
The Ocean City Tourism Commission, Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce and Ocean City Board of Realtors have once again joined forces to promote “America’s Greatest Family Resort” by awarding 11 families a fun-filled, week-long family vacation in Ocean City.
Each of the 11 winners will receive a seven-night stay in a three or four bedroom condo that sleeps as many as eight people. Pictures, addresses and descriptions of each unit are available on the contest entry page.

Foodie Tuesdays scheduled
Foodie Tuesdays at Richard Stockton College in Hammonton are a series of continuing education courses focusing on culinary education. The classes are designed so that participants can sign up for one, all or any number of the courses. Emergency Medical Technician Certification will prepare students to perform basic life support. Meerwald in A.C. this summer
The A.J. Meerwald, New Jersey’s official tall ship, is scheduled to dock at Historic Gardner’s Basin, Atlantic City, from Aug. 1 to 11. Library offers language learning
The Atlantic County Library System now offers more language learning opportunities through the Mango Languages online resource. The most recently added languages are Egyptian, modern standard Arabic, Romanian and Swahili. Mango Languages offers nearly 50 world language courses and15 English as a Second Language courses.
Mango users may choose to learn simple, practical skills for common polite, conversational situations or to learn in-depth and comprehensive language and grammar skills. Each language is presented with an appreciation for cultural nuance and real-world application that goes beyond teaching vocabulary to integrate components of grammar and culture. Mango teaches actual conversation, breaking down complex linguistic elements within an audio-visual framework that draws important connections and builds on information the user already has learned.
No special training, downloads or installation are required to use Mango Languages on a home computer. Free iPhone and Android apps are available through the library system.

The Atlantic Cape Family Support Organization is collecting donated new unopened packages of male and female undergarments from children sizes to young adult. The undergarments are to care for the needs of children during a crisis that ends up in an extended hospital stay.

The organizers of the annual Chefs at the Shore event are making tickets available early specifically for holiday gifts. The 2013 Chefs at the Shore fundraiser is scheduled for 5:30 to 9 p.m. June 20 at Historic Gardner’s Basin, Atlantic City.
The event appeals to “foodies” and environmentalists alike, as it showcases some of the area’s finest food while it funds educational programming at the Atlantic City Aquarium.
