Citizen of Year nominees sought

Absecon’s Citizen of the Year Committee is looking for a person or family to be honored with the 2013 award.

The award is given annually to a volunteer who, without thought of personal gain, has contributed to making Absecon a nice place to work and raise a family. Consideration also will be given to the nominee’s contributions to other communities, organizations and the greater Atlantic County area. Besides the individual award, a financial contribution will be made to the honoree’s favorite charity. The honoree’s name will be engraved on a permanent plaque in Absecon’s City Hall.

The nominee must be an Absecon citizen, family or business person who gives his or her time and talent for the betterment of the community without thought of personal gain, and who does not have a job or position in public service that requires them to perform the tasks that resulted in the contributions. The recipient cannot be a sitting member of a government body. Nominations, with a summary of accomplishments, must be submitted to the Citizen of the Year Committee c/o the Absecon Republican Club, P.O. Box 123, Absecon, NJ 08201, or emailed to AbseconGOP@comcast.net.

Volunteers needed for public art project

The Absecon Economic Development Committee is looking for volunteers to share their time and talent on an upcoming project to enhance the community by sprucing up electrical boxes with artwork by our local artists.

Organizers said they are looking for 3-D pictures that exemplify the natural beauty of Absecon. Creations may be signed, but no commercial advertising will be accepted. Volunteers are asked to submit two renditions, no larger than 8 by 10 inches, to the economic development committee by April 30, c/o Donald Camp, Municipal Complex, 500 Mill Road, Absecon, NJ 08201, with name and phone number on the back of each image. Submissions will not be returned. All entrants must be at least 18 years old.

Anyone who would like to support the project but not produce artwork can send donations to help pay for supplies to the same address. Make checks payable to the City of Absecon, and on the memo line, write, “Paint the town.”
