Atlantic City firefighters stopped a house fire this afternoon that could have destroyed a four-story home, the fire chief said.

Firefighters were called to the home on the 3600 block of Winchester Avenue for an exterior fire at about 12:50 p.m., Chief Dennis Brooks said.

"It was quick-moving but they knocked it down pretty fast," Brooks said.

About 20 people live in the home, which was occupied at the time. No one was injured.

Brooks said code enforcement is on the scene to determine whether the utilities can be kept on. If not, the Red Cross will be called to find places for the occupants to stay.

A fire investigator is also on scene to determine the cause, which is not considered suspicious.

Brooks estimated there was about $5,000 to $10,000 worth of damage.
