Tyquinn James, 25, of Atlantic City, was fatally shot Sunday night on the 1300 block of Adriatic Avenue, acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain said.
According to Press of Atlantic City archives, James had been shot twice before in the city: September 2010 and New Year's Day 2011.
This is Atlantic City's first homicide of this year.
The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit was at the scene.
At least a dozen police vehicles were at the scene at 8:25 p.m. A number of officers and a K-9 unit were seen going in and out of Mecca Fried Chicken, which was cordoned off by police tape.
Atlantic City Councilman Steve Moore, who was at the scene Sunday night, said the violence should be seen as a call to action in the community. The shooting occurred less than two blocks from the New York Avenue School.
"The fact is we don't make guns here but somehow they always get into our community. We can do something to change that," he said. "We don't want to have another year like we had last year."
Atlantic City saw 18 homicides in 2012.
