An Atlantic City man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of his girlfriend in an Atlantic City deli in 2011, acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain announced Tuesday.

Freddy R. Solorzano, 53, pleaded guilty in August to one count of first-degree aggravated manslaughter in the fatal stabbing of Deziree Vivian, 27, of Factoryville, Pa..

Solorzano fatally stabbed Vivian on April 21, 2011, after she fled from him during an argument, McClain said in a statement.

Solorzano chased Vivian down Pacific Avenue with a large butcher knife, followed her into Babajan’s Deli and stabbed her four times in the chest, penetrating her heart and a lung, McClain said.

Solorzano was later arrested at a home on South Florida Avenue and charged with murder and weapons offenses.

Assistant Prosecutor Harlee Stein argued for the maximum sentence of 30 years, but Superior Court Judge Mark Sandson agreed to a maximum of 20 years.

“The most dangerous time for a woman is when she attempts to leave a violent relationship, because it is at that time her batterer faces losing his control over her. This defendant was determined to keep that control, even if it meant controlling the way her life would end,” Stein said, according to the prosecutor’s office. “This was a cold-blooded calculated act of violence that didn’t have to be. He deserves no compassion from this Court.”

Solorzano would become eligible for parole in 17 years, but Sandson said that because of a detainer against him by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Solorzano will be deported from the U.S. upon completion of his sentence.
