Eight Atlantic City police officers were promoted to sergeants Sept. 24.
"I'm happy to see that they finally occurred," police Chief Ernest Jubilee said. "All eight are very deserving. They are hardworking police officers, so I expect them to be hardworking sergeants."
The department is currently below the 330 minimum the city and union agreed upon, with dozens more eligible for retirement by February.
The city currently has 11 recruits going through the academy- three in Camden and eight in Cape May. Camden graduates in December, with the Cape recruits due out in January.
"Hopefully, the city will continue promoting and replacing people as they leave," PBA President Paul Barbere said. "It's nice to see they're following through with the promotions. We have a young department, and they're going to need some direction, especially with all the retirements coming up."
The new sergeants said they are happy to be serving the community in a new way.
"I feel good, happy to move to the next level in my career," said new Sgt. Dean Dooley, a 12-year veteran of the department. "It's a great opportunity."
Sgt. Gena Dorn said she believes in the concept of community policing and wants to be there for the residents and the officers.
"I would like to see our community and the police work together for a better Atlantic City," she said.
The other new sergeants are Michael Tracy, Christian Garofalo, Omar Martin, Raymond Davis, Joseph Jasiecki Jr. and Daniel Corcoran.
