Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa opened its annual poker series with a record attendance of 3,705 players, generating a prize pool of nearly $2 million, for its first event.
The 10th annual Borgata Poker Open, which started Tuesday and continues over the next 15 days, set a single-event turnout record for the East Coast, according to the casino. Last year, the same opening event drew only about 1,800 players, Borgata said.
Record attendance to the opening Deep Stack No Limits Hold’em event meant the prize pool, which is funded by each player’s buy-in of $500, grew to $1,852,500. The winner, who is expected to be determined by Saturday, will take home more than $300,000 with nearly all of the rest of the prize money being divided between the remaining top 199 players.
In addition to the opening event are 26 other tournaments, including the televised World Poker Tour championship, with a prize pool guaranteed to be at least $3 million. The buy-in for that No Limit Hold’em event, which is scheduled for Sept. 16 to 21 is $3,500.
