Volunteers from the Atlantic City Boys and Girls Club spent Thursday morning on the Boardwalk in front of Revel packing bags with food for the Community FoodBank of New Jersey.
The event was sponsored through Feeding America, which also partnered with celebrity chef Marc Forgione. Forgione, whose restaurant American Cut recently opened at Revel, said the effort was one of many he has done to help feed the community.
For more than an hour, about two dozen children worked in a make-shift assembly line, packing items such as celery, apples, oranges, cucumbers, cereal and peanut butter, into bags that were put on a truck.
Margie Barham, executive director of the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, Southern Branch, said the 300 bags of food, containing produce, cereal and peanut butter, will be distributed through the Atlantic City Rescue Mission, Sister Jean’s Kitchen and other outlets in Atlantic City.
Forgione, one of the stars of the television show Iron Chef America, said: “I’m new to the Atlantic City food scene. Up in New York, I do things for charity as much as I can and now that I’m here in Atlantic City, I’d like to give back to the community here as well.”
The event also drew a host of onlookers, including vacationers and area residents walking on the Boardwalk. The high-profile nature of the event meant that others could learn about the importance of donating food in the region, Barham said.
