An Episcopal priest who stole more than $35,000 from an Atlantic City church was sentenced to two years' probation Friday.

Rev. Timothy S. Holder, 57, of Toms River, pleaded guilty to charges in December of writing and cashing more than $35,000 in checks from the Church of the Ascension on Kentucky Avenue while serving as the rector between 2007 and 2009, according to a release from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.

Holder pleaded guilty to third-degree theft by deception on Dec. 12. he was sentenced Friday by Atlantic County Superior Court Judge Mark Sandson to two years' probation. He must pay $24,500 in restitution to the church, the office said.

Assistant Prosecutor Erika Halayko said the church suffered hardships due to the thefts and congregation members in court said the incident created problems for the church with the state and IRS, the office said.
