ATLANTIC CITY — A fire at a vacant home is under investigation this afternoon.

Firefighters were called just before 2 p.m. to a residence on Wistar Place near Revel and found an attic fire, Chief Dennis Brooks said.

"The fire is suspicious," he said. "We believe it was started by squatters up in the attic."

The fire, which was under control in an hour, required special equipment to cut a hole in the roof because it wasn't accessible from inside, Brooks said.

They also called in a Rapid Intervention Team because there were holes throughout the home.

"The whole interior was compromised," Brooks said.

The team was there in case anyone fell through.

Investigators were on the scene at 3:30 p.m. to find the cause.
