A fire forced the evacuated a family of two adults, three children and a dog Wednesday but no injuries were reported.

The fire began around 7 p.m. on the 1200 block of Mediterranean Avenue, said Chief Dennis Brooks. It began in an apartment on the second floor of a two-story building and the cause is under investigation, Brooks said.

There are three apartments on each floor and the fire was in the middle one, he said. Forty firefighters responded to the scene and they were able to contain the fire to the middle apartment, he said.

That unit sustained heavy damage but the others had only some smoke damage, he said.

Brooks said the family was in the unit when the fire started but were able to leave safely. They declined medical treatment. They also declined to speak about the incident.

Brooks said officials were concerned about a fire in a dense area with many units so they responded quickly. The fire did spread to the building's attic.
