Customers staying on three floors of the Showboat Casino Hotel had to be evacuated for about an hour Wednesday night due to a small fire on the hotel’s fifth floor.

The fire started about 7:45 p.m. and set off the building's sprinklers and smoke detector, said Fire Chief Dennis Brooks. No one was injured, but the floor sustained some smoke and water damage, he said.

Brooks said the fire began in Room 544, and the cause was under investigation. A man was in the room when the fire started but he did not sustain any injuries.

The chief said the building's sprinkler system contained the fire to the room, but firefighters had to extinguish the fire in a closet area.

The fourth, fifth and sixth floor were evacuated, but officials said people were allowed back after about an hour.

In the meantime, they were milling around the casino hotel’s lobby waiting to be allowed back to their rooms.

Darlene King, of Utica, N.Y., said she was in her fifth-floor room when she heard screaming outside telling people they had to go downstairs because of a fire. She uses a cane and said it was difficult going down the stairs.

“It was a little exciting. It was a little scary,” she said.
