ATLANTIC CITY -- A young couple from Middlesex County told police Wednesday they were robbed at gunpoint of $120.
However, police said after they spent hours investigating the incident, it turned out to be untrue.
According to Atlantic City Police Department spokeswoman Sgt. Monica McMenamin, George Noonan and Anna Falijiewicz reported the incident to police at about 8:50 p.m.
Noonan, 26, and Falijiewicz, 24, both of Middlesex County, told police they were robbed of $120 and gave a suspect description, McMenamin said.
Later that night, Sgt. Richard Andrews Jr. found a male fitting the suspect description. He was identified by Noonan and Falijiwicz as the assailant.
McMenamin said as the investigation continued, it was discovered that the robbery was fabricated and Noonan and Falijiewicz provided false information to police.
She said the couple had met the man earlier in the evening, but were not harmed by him. They did not have money to get home and made up the incident, police said.
Both have been charged with providing false reports to police.
