About 40 friends and family members of the Atlantic City baby who allegedly died at the hands of his mother’s boyfriend mourned the child Monday morning in an hour-long service at the Victory First Presbyterian Church.
Yusuf E’Miy Stewart-Ali Jr. was remembered in the service by his family as a loving baby, who smiled and laughed and loved to eat and watch TV.
“I know you’re watching me. I can feel the comfort, but it will never be as real as when you were here. I loved you so much,” his mother, Ebony Stewart, 25, wrote in a short letter printed in the funeral program.
The boy was 6 months and 7 days old Sept. 14 when Stewart returned home from work and found him unresponsive.
The boy, who had been left in the boyfriend’s care, was pronounced dead by authorities shortly after Stewart called 911.
Daquan Davis, 19, was arrested and charged with aggravated manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a child. Stewart told The Press of Atlantic City that Davis had been living with her for about a month.
Yusuf, who also had the nickname “Doodie,” according to the funeral program, is survived by his mother; his father, Joseph Parker-Bay, of Baltimore; maternal grandmother, Tracey Stewart, of Atlantic City; one aunt; two uncles and multiple cousins.
