About 40 people had to be evacuated after a stove fire at the Inlet Towers in Atlantic City this afternoon.

A woman and her 1-year-old son were in a third-floor apartment when the stove “exploded” at about 2 p.m., Fire Chief Dennis Brooks said.

The woman immediately left with her son, leaving the door open, which spread smoke into the hallway, Brooks said. About 20 people on the third floor and 20 on the fourth had to be evacuated.

Those out of their apartments are temporarily staying at Jefferies Towers, but are expected to be back home within a few hours, Brooks said. The woman who lives in the apartment will have to be relocated with her son due to the damage there.

The fire is under investigation, but Brooks says it’s not considered suspicious.
