MAYS LANDING — An Atlantic City man arrested in the summer killing of a father of two had his first court appearance Wednesday.

Razzaq Shannon, 21, told the judge he will be hiring an attorney to defend him against charges he fatally shot Christon Hargrove on July 8 in the city's Back Maryland section.

Hargrove, 21, was found shot twice in the head at about 10:30 p.m. in the 800 block of Virginia Avenue. An investigation by the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Unit and city police led to charges being filed against Shannon on Jan. 15.

He was tracked to Atlantic City on Tuesday, and arrested during a high-risk stop by the city's Tactical Team.

Shannon told the judge that he didn't know which attorney he would be hiring.

He told Superior Court Judge Michael Donio he hadn’t been allowed to use a phone.

The judge said he was sure the jail would allow him to call, or his family would be able to arrange a lawyer.

About a dozen of Shannon's supporters were in court, with several calling out, "We love you," as he was led out of the courtroom following the hearing.

Shannon is currently on probation for a previous drug conviction. Court records show he also had a 2011 indictment on weapons offenses, but that was dismissed.

His bail is set at $1 million full cash.
