Students honored for volunteer service

Joseph and Michael Mandes, of Brigantine, both seniors at Atlantic City High School, recently were presented with engraved bronze medallions recognizing their selection as Distinguished Finalists for 2013 in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program.

Joseph was honored for raising nearly $44,000 to support cancer patients through an organization he founded in 2008 called Kids for South Jersey Cancer Fund, and Michael was honored for raising more than $34,000 for the national charity Alex’s Lemonade Stand.

FSA announces poster contest winners

The Family Service Association recently announced the winners of its 10th annual Poster Contest, which ran from January to March.

Students were asked to submit posters accompanied by a paragraph representing the contest’s theme, “Community Connection through Hope and Healing.” The contest was divided into grades 1-3, grades 4-6 and grades 7-8. Winners were:

Grades 1-3: first place, Nathaniel Perez, Leeds Avenue School; second place, Izabelle Ficca, Leeds Avenue School; third place, Mariha Samapti, Washington Avenue School

Grades 4-6: first place, Hritluk Mazumder, Texas Avenue School; second place, Sabina Mim, Texas Avenue School; third place, Ferdusy Akthar, Texas Avenue School

Grades 7-8: first place, Renee Toussant, Uptown Complex; second place, Reina Lopez, Uptown Complex; third place, Terrence Bivins, Uptown Complex.
