On May 19, Kiddie Korner Day Care in Egg Harbor Township will host a fundraiser to help purchase a service dog for 2-year-old Adalynne "Addie" Gill, of Northfield.
At 19 months old, Addie received a diagnosis of a rare brain malformation called polymicrogyria, which has caused her to miss developmental milestones and, more visibly, given her severe behavioral issues.
One of the few things that has helped Addie manage her condition is her grandfather's dog, Cooper. Now Addie's mother, Samantha, has established Addie's Forever Friend Fund to purchase a service dog from the organization 4 Paws for Ability.
Getting a dog for her daughter, Gill said, would bring calm to the family's frenzied lifestyle.
"My god, I would be able to breathe," Gill said.
The fundraiser, which runs from 1 to 4 p.m., will feature a Chinese auction, prizes, games, an open gym and vendors.
Purchasing a service dog through 4 Paws for Ability costs $22,000, of which Gill hopes to raise $13,000 through fundraisers such as the May 19 event.
Early intervention therapist Jackie Smith, of Mays Landing, has worked with Addie for about a year. While purchasing a therapy dog is an expensive proposition, she believes it would be beneficial for Addie and her family.
"I think it would absolutely help her, just the things a therapy dog would do," said Smith, who lives in Mays Landing.
