A 49-year-old Egg Harbor Township man who engaged police in a standoff that closed the Black Horse Pike for eight hours Tuesday has been charged with terroristic threats and other offenses.

Police said Frank Waggenhoffer was undergoing evaluation Wednesday at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s City Campus prior to being committed to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.

The suspect was charged with terroristic threats, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, resisting arrest and simple assault, police said. Bail was set at $50,000 cash.

Police officers responded to a home in the West Atlantic City section of the township at about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a report that Waggenhoffer had barricaded himself in the residence after making threats to harm himself and others. The victim who reported the incident fled the home prior to the police’s arrival.

What followed was a nearly eight-hour standoff that closed both directions of the Black Horse Pike, forced the evacuation of neighboring homes and involved members of the Atlantic County Emergency Response Team and officers from a number of police departments, EMTs and firefighters.

According to police, SWAT members made entry into the home at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and took the suspect into custody.
