An Egg Harbor Township man who posed as a police officer while kidnapping and sexually assaulting at least eight women in Atlantic City has been indicted, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Hiten Patel faces 36 counts, including sexual assault, kidnapping, criminal restraint, attempted sexual assault, possession of an imitation firearm, impersonation of a law enforcement officer, attempted robbery, terroristic threats and luring.

The incidents occurred between April 2011 and August 2012, according to a statement from the Prosecutor’s Office.

The 34-year-old was arrested Aug. 2, 2012, after he allegedly ordered a 21-year-old woman into his van in Pennsauken, Camden County. He identified himself as a detective and drove the woman to a location near the Atlantic City Aquarium at Gardner’s Basin before sexually assaulting her, authorities said.

The incident was reported to police, who apprehended Patel. He was taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility on $1 million bail, officials said. Patel posted the bail by bond, was conditionally released on a GPS monitoring unit and was placed under house arrest.

Patel was employed by a contracting company that does business at the William J. Hughes Technical Center in Egg Harbor Township. He did not have a U.S. government security clearance, according to the FAA, just a basic security check that allowed him to access only his general work area at the center.

After the initial arrest, Atlantic City police detectives and the FBI investigated previous reports of other sexual assaults in Atlantic City. The investigation resulted in additional charges against Patel.

The possibility that there could be additional victims remains under investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Prosecutor’s Office at 909-7800 or the Atlantic City Police Department Detective Bureau at 347-5766.
