Egg Harbor Township police will be conducting a checkpoint Friday on the Black Horse Pike near Shore Mall to crack down on drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Officers will be operating the checkpoint between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the Black Horse Pike between Tilton and Uibel Avenue.

Police say the goal of the checkpoint is to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and increase enforcement visibility at a time of year known for social gatherings and alcohol consumption.

In New Jersey, 39 percent of motor vehicle fatalities are alcohol related. Impaired drivers kill nearly 18,000 people each year.
