Joseph T. Wilkins, the first speaker in the Greate Egg Harbour Township Historical Society new speakers series, first read about 19th-century House Speaker Thomas B. Reed in Barbara Tuchman’s ‘The Proud Tower’ in 1968 and spent the next four decades researching the Republican congressman from Maine before writing his historical novel ‘The Speaker Who Locked up the House.’
