A 17-year-old male has been arrested on charges of breaking into an Egg Harbor Township church and assaulting its president.

The juvenile has committed other offenses at the church this month, including stealing collection money, police said.

Police responded to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church at Ridge Avenue and Mill Road at 8:30 a.m. Saturday when the parish’s president, Brian Sacco, 48, of the township, alerted police a juvenile was inside the church.

The suspect, who is from Atlantic City, assaulted Sacco when he tried to detain him, police said. He then fled the church on foot, but Sacco followed him and helped police arrest him on Mill Road.

Police said Sacco was not injured.

The juvenile had many recent incidents, including defecating on the church bus on Wednesday, burglarizing the church on July 8 and burglarizing the St. Paul Church on Tremont Avenue, which was discovered on Saturday, police said.

The juvenile was charged with burglary, theft of collection money, robbery, assault and criminal mischief, police said. He was taken to Harborfields Juvenile Detention Facility in Egg Harbor City.
