New ownership is one of changes at Changes Salon in Risley Square

The staff of Changes Hair Salon in Galloway Township gathered for a photo recently in their newly re-opened location. Clockwise from top left are Randi Scheck, of Smithville, Jill Glenn, of Port Republic, and Madeline Wamsher, owner Nicole Romanowski, and Andrea Craig, all of Galloway.

Nicole Romanowski walked into the Changes Salon in Risley Square in Galloway Township last December looking for a job. A few short months later, she was its owner.

When the previous owner mentioned in February that she was looking to get out of the industry, Romanowski leapt at the chance to fulfill her dream of owning a salon.

"I moved down here, and I just walked in to get a job and it just happened," Romanowski said. "I had always wanted to buy, but I mean this was the perfect situation, it was already set up."

On Nov. 3, Changes will hold its grand reopening party, offering free haircuts by appointment from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to the free haircuts, there will be giveaways and refreshments, as well as free mini-facials courtesy of nearby Cloud 9 Day Spa. Haircuts come with a $10 gift certificate to be used on the next visit.

Changes offers a full range of salon services, with women's cuts starting at $20 and men's at $15. Prices are 20 percent off for the first visit.

Romanowski, whose staff includes two holdovers from the previous staff in Jill Glenn and Andrea Craig, as well as new stylists Randi Scheck and Madeline Wamsher, said she's enjoying the freedom to incorporate her ideas into the salon.

"It's being able to start fresh with these new girls, you can implement your own ways, that, coming into somebody else's territory I couldn't change much, but now I can have things the way I want them," Romanowski said.

Scheck, who has been with Changes for four years, said the location has retained much of its clientele since Romanowski took ownership and hopes to add new clients as well.

Scheck said Romanowski has stressed that the staff foster an atmosphere of openness and comfort for their customers.

"It's comfortable, relaxing, I mean, of course, we are experienced and give good services to people, but I think people feel really comfortable at our shop," Glenn said. "They're not intimidated, they don't feel they have to get ready and dressed up to go out there or anything, because they're coming here to get their hair done. I think it's just more about the relaxed atmosphere and feeling comfortable."

Being her own boss has often has given Romanowski her share of trouble, and it's certainly not a get-rich-quick scheme, but so far, she said, so good.

"You think you're going to be rich all of a sudden, but it doesn't work like that, but you know what, the girls are really great," Romanowski said. "I love coming to work."
