Richard Stockton College’s nonprofit business arm will fund the almost $311,000 cost of turning four tennis courts on the main campus in Galloway Township into more parking for the fall.

But those who want to park there will have to pay a fee.

The Stockton Affiliated Services Inc. board of directors on Friday approved the funds to assist the college in providing more parking.

Parking on campus is currently free but has been at a premium during peak hours as college enrollment has grown and the new science building has taken up a former parking area. A lot was added at the north end of campus, with shuttle bus service to the main campus.

All students pay a transportation fee of $70 per semester and $35 during the summer that covers the cost of the shuttles, parking lot maintenance and bike paths.

Stockton Vice President for Administration and Finance Charles Ingram said the new lot will hold about 150 parking spaces, which will be offered first to faculty, then staff, then students. The cost per space has not been determined.

There is one small fee-based lot of about 20 spaces on campus that costs $125 per year. Ingram said he expects the new fee to be higher.

The college plans to add new tennis courts to a site off Pomona Road that is being developed for athletics. The new courts will meet the criteria for National College Athletic Association tournaments.

Ingram said the parking project has been granted Pinelands Commission approval and is expected to be ready for the fall semester.
