A convicted sex offender was indicted Tuesday on charges he sent sexually explicit videos of himself to a 14-year-old and then traveled to meet her in Mays Landing after having sexual conversations with her.

But when William Ritchie, 52, of Gloucester City, Camden County, arrived to meet the girl, he was met by members of the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Computer Crimes Unit instead, according to Assistant Prosecutor Janet Gravitz, who presented the case to a grand jury.

Ritchie is charged with attempted luring, attempted sexual assault, attempted endangering and attempted criminal sexual contact. The 11-count indictment alleges there had been several sexually explicit discussions with the girl — who was really an undercover detective — after they met in an Internet chat room at the end of July.

Ritchie previously served more than four years in prison for sexual assault on a victim younger than 13. He is not listed as a sex offender on the national registry.

If convicted, Ritchie could face as many as 10 years in prison and $150,000 in fines.
