It's always nice to have some extra cash in your pocket, whether you're an individual or the Cologne Volunteer Fire Company.

On Sept. 7, the Cologne Fire Ladies Auxiliary will hold its Giant Yard Sale. Proceeds from the event will support the Fire Department - and the bargains, Ladies Auxiliary member Elaine Will said, are not to be missed by the community.

"You can find anything at these events," Will said. "Antiques can be there, baby items, household items, furtniture. It's just, there's such a variety of items you can buy, so I'm always looking forward to a buy here and there."

The Ladies Auxiliary held its first yard sale in the springtime in the early 2000s, inviting members of the community to set up tables inside and outside the hall from which to hawk their discount wares. The event proved a runaway success, and in its fourth year, they added another in the fall.

About 90 vendors have signed on to take part in the event, and all spaces have been spoken for, Will said. In addition to the vendors, the Ladies Auxiliary will sell hot dogs, drinks and desserts from concession stands.

The yard sale always draws a big crowd, Will said, and she expects the same this time around.

"We get a lot of people coming out to buy and see what kind of bargains they can get," Will said. "It's a very busy time."

Many of those who vend at the yard sale are regulars. Shirley Bickle, of Sewell, saw the sign for the yard sale on a trip to Atlantic City about five years ago. She signed up, and has been back each year since.

While Bickle has participated in other community yard sales, she says the Ladies Auxiliary's is her favorite, because the table fees are reasonable and the auxiliary goes out of its way to make vendors comfortable.

"This is probably my favorite one, or I wouldn't keep going," Bickle said. "It takes me an hour to get down here, but this is the best one that I've ever done."

The yard sale brings in about $1,200 for the group from vendors alone, with concessions and donations bringing in additional funds. Past yard sales have helped cover the cost of fire equipment and a refrigerator, and funds raised at the Sept. 7 event will go toward general maintenance of the fire hall.

The Ladies Auxiliary has held several yard sales now, but each one is new and different, and each offers unique buys. Will, for one, can't wait to see whose trash will become her treasure this time.

"It's fun," she said. "I don't have a table. I'm just one of the workers, but I'm always looking forward. I'm always able to get something for my grandson."
