Business: Jersey Shore Federal Credit Union branch

Location: Hamilton Mall, near Macy’s

Owners: Mutually owned by members

Employees: 4

Phone: 609-646-3339

The Jersey Shore Federal Credit Union has opened its fifth branch, and it’s unlike the others in one significant way.

Customers still conduct their business with live tellers, but at the Hamilton Mall branch, those tellers are behind a wall and appear on video screens.

Customers stand before the screens and converse with the tellers via microphones and speakers. A clear plastic cone above the customers reduces extraneous noise and allows a private conversation.

To pass papers between customer and teller, each of the two stations has a pneumatic tube to whisk tubes carrying them back and forth.

Earlier this month, teller Tim Foreman, of Somers Point, said the experience was different, but he was quickly getting used to talking with customers via video screen.

Anne Musto, chief operating officer of Jersey Federal, said the teller stations address a concern for security, since the branch is located adjacent to the entrance to the mall.

The manager of the new branch, Annie DeJesus, of Egg Harbor Township, said the personal teller stations are modeled on credit union facilities in Pennsylvania.

“It’s funny, but a lot of people like the concept,” DeJesus said. “Members say it’s a different feeling, more modern and updated.”

The full service branch also takes applications for loans, and customers can apply for and set up new accounts.

DeJesus said a couple of computers on a table in the lobby allow credit union members to check on their accounts and conduct online banking via the Jersey Shore website.

There is also a coin-counting machine for members’ convenience, and it’s free.

Through the end of the month, as part of the opening specials, the branch will be giving away scratch-off cards with loan discounts and boxes of personal checks. There will also be a drawing for $100 Jersey Shore MasterCard gift cards.

The mall branch of Jersey Shore Federal Credit Union is open seven days a week, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.
