Firefighters were able to douse a forest fire Saturday evening before it spread beyond about an acre of woods in the Cologne section of Hamilton Township.
Township police say authorities responded to a report of a forest fire in a wooded area behind the Cologne Gardens Apartments at about 6:30 p.m.
Firefighters from the Hamilton Township Forest Fire Service and the Cologne Fire Department were able to prevent the fire from spreading. It did not reach any structures and no injuries were reported.
This is the latest of several forest fires to burn across South Jersey in recent weeks, mainly due to recent dry conditions.
As of May 1, however, the state Forest Fire Service had put South Jersey's fire danger at "low." Residents are still advised to exercise caution and not discard cigarettes or other flammable items along roadsides.
The Hamilton fire remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Hamilton Township Police Department at 609-626-2700.
