The Hurley in the Morning Golf Open has raised tens of thousands of dollars for area charities, organizer and local radio host Harry Hurley said.

The event held Friday at the Mays Landing Golf and Country Club included a silent auction and a round of golf, bringing 350 to 500 people to the club Friday night, Hurley said.

“We’re extremely grateful to the community for their support,” Hurley said by phone Monday. “Right now, just over $77,000 (has been raised) for this year. Each year we’ve (raised) more.”

Hurley said that when all pledges have been collected, the event likely will have raised more than $80,000 for area charities, including the HERO Campaign and Court Appointed Special Advocates.

Even though his radio show runs from noon to 4 p.m. on WOND 1400 AM, Hurley said he broadcast from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the event, with the help of his former employer, Townsquare Media, over 1450 ESPN.

“I called it a Macy’s and Gimble moment,” he said, referring to the two department stores helping each other in the holiday film “Miracle on 34th Street.” “I needed to keep my promise to contributors to do a live broadcast. It is a company I worked for, for over 15 years. We’ve always had a collegial and friendly relationship. I called the general manager, and he approved it on the spot.”

The foursome of CBS 3 television sports anchor Beasley Reece won the event, shooting a 60, which Hurley called “pretty incredible.”

Among the charities that have or will receive grants are the Shore Medical Center Health Foundation, The Ensign John R. Elliott HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers, Atlantic Prevention Resources, Atlantic Cape Community College, Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation, Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority Foundation, FACES 4 Autism and Longport Volunteer Firefighters.
