HAMMONTON — Recently resigned local high school band director Jason Koenig, 26, who was charged Thursday with sexual assault on a band member, had not turned himself in by early Friday evening, police said.

On Friday police Chief Robert Jones said he believed Koenig, a Hammonton resident, to be with his parents in an out-of-state location, and that there was a nationwide warrant for Koenig’s arrest, so he expected him to be picked up soon.

Authorities had expected Koenig to turn himself in sooner. Jones said Thursday that Koenig had a lawyer who was arranging his surrender.

The 26-year-old Koenig allegedly sexually assaulted a 16-year-old student in November and December of 2013.

“To the best of my knowledge it was a female student,” said Board of Education President Joe Giralo on Thursday. “The full nature (of the allegations) has not been made clear to the administration or to myself.”

Giralo said all of the activities Hammonton High School band has planned for summer, which include performances in parades and practice to get ready for the fall, will go on as planned.

He said the district is making counseling available to any student who needs help dealing with feelings about the allegations and Koenig’s resignation April 23, a day before the Spring band trip.

For about three years Koenig was assistant band director, and has been director about a year. Middle School Band Director Tim White has agreed to act as interim high school band director.
