Cape May County received a low bid of about $533,000 Wednesday to repair Ocean Drive in Avalon and restore access between Ludlam and Seven Mile islands.

The road between Sea Isle City and Avalon has been closed since Hurricane Sandy’s powerful storm surge eroded away the roadbed and crumbled the asphalt overtop. Fixing and stabilizing it will require more than 2,300 tons of asphalt and 1,510 tons of riprap.

South State Inc., of Bridgeton, proposed the lowest price among five companies that bid on the project. The Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders may chose to award the contract at its next meeting on Tuesday, April 9.

The other bids included about $538,0000 by A.E. Stone Inc, of Egg Harbor Township, $588,840 by Mount Construction Inc., of Berlin, $716,264 by Ricky Slade Construction Inc. and $728,081 by J.P.C. Group Inc., of Gloucester Township.

County Engineer Dale Foster said the county plans to temporarily reopen the roadway for the summer by the end of May and then begin a project for a long-term fix in the late fall or winter. That will include more road work and repairs to the bridge that could total more than $12 million.
