MIDDLE TOWNSHIP — Authorities on Wednesday announced an arrest in a November motor-vehicle accident that resulted in the death of a Lower Township man.

Robert DeMarco, 30, of Williamstown, Gloucester County, was charged with vehicular homicide and manslaughter, township police Chief Chris Leusner and Cape May County Prosecutor Robert Taylor said in a joint statement.

The Nov. 7, 2012, accident on Route 47, near the Natali Vineyard, resulted in the death of Robert Pitts, 65, of Lower Township. Authorities said Pitts was driving south on Route 47 when DeMarco, who was driving north, swerved into his lane. Pitts was extricated from his vehicle and taken to AtlanticCare Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities said the investigation determined DeMarco was “impaired by narcotics” at the time. DeMarco, who faces as long as 10 years in prison for each charge, was in the Cape May County jail with bail set at $150,000.

The Middle Township Detectives Division and the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit investigated.
