Energy Assistance Expo set

Atlantic City Electric, in collaboration with Cape Human Resources, South Jersey Industries and United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey, will hold an Economic and Energy Assistance Expo from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Christ Gospel Community Life Center, 2209 Route 9 South, Whitesboro.

Representatives of Atlantic City Electric, South Jersey Gas and other Cape May County social service providers will be available to discuss assistance programs for those who qualify. Eligibility differs by program and certain restrictions apply. Attendees must bring a lease, property tax or mortgage statement; proof of current income (last four pay stubs if paid weekly and last two if paid biweekly); Social Security insurance, Social Security disability, temporary assistance for need families or general assistance award letters; Social Security cards for all household members; and a current gas, oil and electric bill. For those who with no income, an affidavit of non-income is required.

Animal Alliance seeks members

The Animal Alliance of Cape May County is holding a membership drive to help defray the costs associated with running its clinic.

With the help of donors and volunteers, more than 15,000 cats and dogs have been spayed or neutered since the clinic opened in 2005, and more than 26,800 volunteer hours have been logged at the clinic. Annual dues for individual alliance members are $10. Animal Alliance CMC is a 501(c)3 charitable all-volunteer organization and annual membership dues and all other contributions are tax deductible. All donations go to defray costs associated with operating the clinic.

Legion to honor POW/MIAs

The Cape May County American Legion Posts will conduct the POW/MIA Recognition Day Ceremony on Sept. 20.

Free eye exams offered

Volunteers in Medicine and the New Jersey Commission for the Blind will offer an eye clinic from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 20, in Cape May Court House. Dr. Dennis Cardillo will provide free eye exams to VIM patients as well as people who are not registered with VIM, as long as they meet VIM’s eligibility standards.

Volunteers in Medicine is a free clinic for residents of Cape May County who have no access to health insurance and meet federal poverty guidelines. Space is limited. To register, call 609-463-2846.

Beach Writers talk law at Jessie Creek Winery

On Oct. 27, the Beach Writers Autumn Retreat will take place at Jessie Creek Winery, 1 N. Delsea Drive, Cape May Court House. This one-day seminar is a satellite of North Wildwood Beach Writers Conference held in June every year. The retreat complements the conference’s focus on writing and publishing with the next step: protecting your rights as an author.

The guest speaker for the morning session is Tonya Evans, associate professor of law at Widener University School of Law (Harrisburg campus) and an attorney specializing primarily in the areas of entertainment law (literary, music and film) and intellectual property (copyright and trademark).

Playwright to visit Cape May Stage

Playwright Mark St. Germain, author of “Freud’s Last Session,” will pay Cape May Stage a special visit Sept. 21 and 22. In two talk-backs after the 8 p.m. performances, St. Germain will explain to audiences the inspiration for the show and the process of tackling the radically different positions of the two main characters. Audiences will get the opportunity to pose questions and engage in discourse with St. Germain, accompanied by light refreshments in the intimate setting of the Robert Shackleton Playhouse.

“Freud’s Last Session” stars Cape May Stage veterans Joel Rooks and Mark Irish and runs from Sept. 18 to Oct. 19 at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse at the corner of Bank and Lafayette Streets in downtown Cape May. Performances are at 8 p.m. and occur Tuesdays through Sundays with a special $25 anniversary matinee at 3 p.m. Oct. 19. An additional talk back with the cast and crew of “Freud’s Last Session” will take place at 5 p.m. Sept. 29 before that evening’s performance. Complimentary refreshments will be served as the idea of contradictions is addressed — between the irreconcilabilities and commonalities of faith and science, reality and fantasy — and the role these contradictions play in the show.

Stone Harbor to host food, wine fest

The Stone Harbor Chamber of Commerce’s second annual Savor September Food and Wine Festival will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Sept. 21 in the Downtown Stone Harbor Shopping District. Enjoy the area’s best foods wines, art and music on a tented 96th Street.

The festival will include seafood and festival favorites in addition to wine and beer tastings. Art, children’s activities, Wheaton Glass art glass blowing, and more will be available throughout the day. Festival patrons will be able to enjoy one or all of the four musical acts slated to play the festival, including Eddie Morgan and Rek’d for Jazz. A new activity to the Stone Harbor area, our annual Grape Stomping Competition will begin at 1 p.m. As many as 24 teams will have the opportunity to sign up and stomp their way to a Fabulous Foot Trophy. ACA to hold open house

The Academy of Culinary Arts will hold an open house for those interested in learning more about the Culinary Arts Training Program offered through Atlantic Cape Community College’s Continuing Education Division, 3 p.m., Sept. 16, at the Cape May County Campus, 341 Court House-South Dennis Road in Cape May Court House.

The open house will feature a meet and greet with ACA representatives, information about the program and a tour of the kitchen.

ACA’s Culinary Arts Training Program offers hands-on courses that focus on the mastery of cooking principles and practical techniques for those interested in enhancing their culinary prowess. Topics and skills taught in this fast-paced, five-month program cover the many areas of the professional kitchen, including: ServSafe Certification, master cooking techniques; short order and pantry skills; bread baking, pie making, cake decorating and plated desserts; stocks, soups and sauces; and time management and organizational skills.

O.C. native to present screening of ‘The Quest’

Ocean City native Lance Miller returns to the town where he grew up to attend a special screening of “The Quest” documentary, an emotional story about the history of Corvette racing and his father’s dream.

This event takes place following the Boardwalk Corvette Show on Sept. 22 at the Ocean City Music Pier on the Boardwalk. The historic 1960 No. 3 Corvette featured in the film will be on display at 5 p.m., followed by the screening at 6 p.m. and a meet-and-greet with the filmmakers at 7:45 p.m. “The Quest” chronicles the beginnings of Corvette Racing at the famed Le Mans 24 Hour Endurance Race in France in 1960. Dennis Township schools doing Child Find

Parents who suspect their child may have a disability can get free help from their local school district’s Child Study Team.

The Dennis Township school district is organizing a Child Find campaign to assist in the identification of unserved or underserved youth with a delay or disability from birth through age 21. Information also may be obtained about early intervention services and special education programs throughout New Jersey. A child may be eligible for services and accommodations under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Under Section 504, a person with a disability is one who either “has a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities; has a record of such impairment; or is regarded as having such impairment”. Section 504 requires school districts to provide a free appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment to all eligible students with disabilities. If the Section 504 Committee determines that a child has a disability under Section 504, it must develop and implement a Section 504 plan for the delivery of needed services.

The Friends and Volunteers of the Ocean City Free Public Library have announced ticket sales for the annual Author’s Luncheon.

Linda Fairstein, New York Times bestselling author of the Alex Cooper mysteries and a former New York prosecutor, will speak at the Flanders Hotel at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 17. Tickets are $30. Red Cross, Bob’s Discount Furniture launch scholarship program

Bob’s Discount Furniture and the American Red Cross launched the High School Heroes Scholarship Program during the New York Giants’ third annual American Red Cross blood drive Aug. 25.

This program will give high school students in New York and New Jersey the opportunity to compete with other schools during the 2013-14 school year for a share of $250,000 in scholarship money. The High School Heroes program honors students who make exceptional contributions to the American Red Cross blood donor program in their schools, and helps encourage young people to become involved by helping patients in need.

Students who host at least two high school blood drives through the year and achieve an annual participation rate of at least 30 percent of their school’s age-eligible students are qualified to win a base scholarship of $250. Students who meet those initial requirements are also eligible to win additional scholarships, including as many as eight $1,000 grand prize scholarships per winning school. The winners in each state are determined by the number of students who donate and the total units collected.

Stone Harbor offers free ‘child tag’ program for families

Few things are more frightening for parents or their children than when a child gets lost on a crowded beach. Stone Harbor’s “Child Tag” program helps identify children and reunite them with their parents quickly.

Each summer, Stone Harbor beach tag inspectors offer free Child Tags to families to fix to a child’s bathing suit much like a traditional beach tag. The Child Tag contains a special number that corresponds to information provided by the parents at the Stone Harbor beach tag booth. If a child becomes lost on a beach and is wearing a Child Tag, an adult can simply notify any member of the Stone Harbor Beach Patrol or any beach inspector. The number on the tag identifies the child and accelerates the process of reuniting the family. The same tag can be used each season for children who frequent the Stone Harbor beach; current records date back to 2006 for children who are registered with the program. Parents are asked to provide basic information to the beach tag booth including the child’s name, date of birth, parent or guardian name, date of birth and Social Security number, the family local address and phone numbers, and other essential information. The beach tag booth keeps that information as long as the parents ask them to.

Disaster relief benefit set for Ocean Galleries

Ocean Galleries and the Southern Shore Chapter of American Red Cross have joined forces to raise funds for disaster relief efforts. A fundraiser reception will take place from 4 to 8 pm. Atlantic Cape to offer training in geospatial technology

This fall, Atlantic Cape Community College will offer Geospatial Technician Certification, a new training program in one a fast-growing career fields.

Geospatial Technician Certification will meet 6 to 9 p.m., Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Oct. 7 at the Mays Landing Campus, Building T, 5100 Black Horse Pike. The course follows the STARS curriculum series, designed to teach and assess a student’s level of competence in the geospatial skill set required by the geospatial industry to become employed in the field. CONTACT Cape-Atlantic celebrates 40 years

CONTACT Cape-Atlantic has been serving the residents of Atlantic and Cape May counties for 40 years — and is planning a celebration.

The Telephone Reassurance Program provides daily phone calls to the elderly and disabled. The Gatekeeper Program links people with needed services in to continue their independent living. Volunteers are making a difference one call at a time.

Mutt Strut set in Cape May

The seventh annual Mutt Strut is set for Sept. 28 (rain date Sept. 29) on Cape May’s beachfront Promenade.

This annual event brings together dog owners and their canine companions for a beachfront strut, one of the few times four-footed friends are permitted on the Promenade. Registration is required and takes place near Convention Hall on Beach Avenue near Gurney Street. The event runs 8 a.m. to noon.

A donation of $1 per leg ($2/person, $4/dog) helps purchase K9 protective vests for the Cape May County Sheriff’s K9 Unit and supports area dog training and canine community programs of the event’s sponsor, Cape May County Dog Obedience Training Club. In 2012, almost $3,000 was donated toward K9 vests. This year’s goal is to buy two vests costing $2,200 each. The event offers fun for all, with door prizes, giveaways, auction, children’s activity table and K9 demonstrations, along with educational materials on dog ownership, training and adoption. Veterans groups support Aviation Museum programming

The Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum recently received financial contributions from several local veterans groups to help support and expand the museum’s education and general programming.

The museum will use the funds, in conjunction with NASW’s own financial resources, to continue and further develop the two educational summer academies NASW now coordinates. In 2013, the museum provided two full and four partial scholarships to participating students. Funds also will support community outreach programs to home school, scouting, underprivileged youth groups and the museum’s Free Historic Lecture Series.

Technical school offers veterinary assistant course

The Cape May County Technical School is offering a veterinary assistant course for entry-level employment opportunities in an animal medical facility.

This course includes both front office procedures as well as the technical skills needed to assist with animal care. The course includes 120 hours of classroom/clinical instruction and 20 hours of an unpaid externship experience in the veterinary field. Big Brothers, Sisters fundraiser set

New Vistas Corporation will hold its 11th annual Miniature Golf and Scavenger Hunt fundraiser for Big Brothers and Big Sisters from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 15 at Castaway Cove Seaport Village on the Boardwalk in Ocean City.

This year’s event starts off with a Fun in the Sun scavenger hunt from 11 a.m. to 12 noon. The Mini Golf Tournament at Castaway Cove Seaport Village is from noon to 2 p.m. The afternoon will finish with prizes awarded to the winners of the scavenger hunt and the mini golf tournament.

Walk for Wounded set for Sept. 28

On Sept. 28, Ocean City Home Bank and Operation First Response will present the fifth annual Walk for the Wounded. Registration takes place at the Ocean City Music Pier at 8:30 a.m., and the three-mile Walk on the Boardwalk begins at 10 a.m.

Four years have passed since Ocean City Home Bank President Steve Brady offered to organize the event. The first walk took place in fall 2009, and it has been held each year after, raising more than $200,000 for Operation First Response, a nonprofit organization that provides financial assistance to injured soldiers and their families. Ocean City firefighters again have pledged to support the event, planning to sell stickers and T-shirts to raise money for the walk. In addition, Mainland Regional High School’s Support Our Troops club has set a fundraising goal of $10,000.

Walk for the Wounded raises funds for Operation First Response through pledges solicited by individual walkers and teams of walkers, as well as event sponsorships and fees for advertisements in the event’s dedication booklet. All proceeds benefit Operation First Response, a national 501c(3) nonprofit organization. Of every dollar raised for Operation First Response, 90 cents is donated to wounded soldiers and their families in times of crisis.

Garden tours planned for September

New Jersey Audubon’s Nature Center of Cape May invites gardening enthusiasts to join gardening naturalist and author Pat Sutton as she leads a series of tours in the county — visit a variety of gardens, each one of which showcases unique methods, techniques and styles.

On Sept. 24, 25 and 26 join Sutton during the peak of Cape May County’s world famous Monarch butterfly migration as she visits gardens that have hosted Monarchs since May. Expect to see clouds of Monarchs and other butterflies and learn about the five different kinds of milkweed plant and various nectar plants. This tour explores the monarch butterfly migration by locating monarch eggs, caterpillars and maybe even a chrysalis.

These tours are limited to 25 people. Cost of the tours is $35 per tour for members and $45 for nonmembers with discounted rates available when committing to three or more tours. Tours run from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Bring a lunch to enjoy in one of the gardens on the tour.

Free postpartum depression support group forming

Cooperative Care will offer a free support group for new moms who are experiencing postpartum depression, and moms of older children who are experiencing depressive symptoms that affect bonding with their children.

Mothers with depression often deal with feelings of hopelessness, feelings of being a bad mother, lack of support from others, and a supportive group can help. Cooperative Care is a new mental health service in Rio Grande, located at 1076 Rt 47 South. Most insurance is accepted, and mental health services are available for marital, family and personal issues.

School supply drive under way

A national school supply drive will benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Atlantic City and Vineland and the Lakehurst Navy Youth Center.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of America and Staples are teaming up with teen actor Jake T. Austin for the Staples for Students National School Supply Drive for kids in need. Until Sept. 28, customers can donate $1 or more at their local Staples store with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting local students. All donations will be given locally to the Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City and Vineland and the Lakehurst Navy Youth Center to ensure they get into the hands of disadvantaged youth just in time for the new school year. Vanessa Sorace, owner of Zoo Sitters, LLC, In-Your-Home Pet Sitting and Dog Walking, now offers Pet Tech classes for pet owners and pet care professionals. Pet Tech is the first international training center dedicated to pet first aid, CPR and care. Sorace recently completed the Pet Tech training program.

The eight-hour class includes skills and information necessary to prepare pet owners for a medical emergency involving their pet. Topics include: CPR, rescue breathing, shock management, bleeding and choking protocols, injury and wellness exams, heat and cold injuries, dental care, nutrition, senior pet care and more. Upon class completion, students obtain a two-year certification in pet first aid and CPR. The class takes place at the Golden Inn in Avalon, and includes continental breakfast.

VIM to honor Lions, Cramer

Volunteers in Medicine, or VIM, of Cape May County will hold its seventh annual gala event to honor and celebrate those in the community who have helped make the 11-year-old clinic a reality.

This year’s theme is “A ThanksGathering in the Garden,” which will take place Sept. 20 at the Abbie Holmes Estate in Clermont. The evening will include dancing on the garden patio, watching a fall sunset and dining from a menu by Chef Heather Holden. The Stone Harbor Lions will be celebrated as Outstanding Caring Neighbors. The Lions equipped the Eye Room at the Clinic with state of the art equipment and have funded VIM’s eye program since opening day. Dr. Kenneth Cramer will be honored as Outstanding Volunteer Physician. Cramer, of Cape Urgent Care, has been volunteering at VIM since 2009.

Jersey Shore Pops seeking volunteers

Caper 10 group seeks new members

In the communities that comprise the Lower Cape May Regional School District, one program in the past 20 years, has provided more than $368,000 in scholarship aid to families of LCMR graduates, the Caper 10 Alumni Association said.

The association was founded in 1993 by 10 community minded graduates of Cape May High School, or LCMR. The group determined that if they would each contribute $100 annually to a dedicated fund, they could award a $1,000 scholarship to a student who was not in the top 10 of the graduating class and to whom $1,000 might make the difference to be able to attend the college of their choice. The idea caught on, and Caper 10 now makes $3,000 awards to as many as nine graduates each year. Chairman Ed Sheretta reminded prospective members, that there are no fundraisers or meetings to attend — one only has to write a check for $100 to the group.

Vaccines available for adults

The Cape May County Department of Health has a variety of vaccines available for adults in Cape May County.

The specific vaccines an adult needs are determined by factors such as age, lifestyle, risk conditions, locations of travel and previous vaccines. Residents are advised to talk to their doctor or nurse about what is recommended. The Health Department has most adult vaccines available free or low-cost. Call 609-465-1200 to ask about what vaccines you may need and to schedule an appointment. Adult vaccines are currently available to prevent: chickenpox, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, HPV, pertussis, meningitis, pneumonia and shingles.

Beach guide available for people with disabilities

The 2013 edition of “A Guide to Accessing Cape May County’s Beaches and Surf Chairs for People with Disabilities” is now available on the Cape May County Website,, through the County Department of Tourism and on the website of the state Department of Human Services/Division of Disability Services.

This brochure provides detailed information on the accessibility of beaches in Avalon, Cape May City, Cape May Point, Ocean City, Sea Isle City, Stone Harbor, Strathmere in Upper Township and the Wildwoods. It also highlights the investment these municipalities have made in surf chairs, beach accessible wheelchairs with large, balloon-type wheels that don’t get stuck in the sand.

Cape May County Museum participates in Blue Star Museums

The Cape May County Museum has announced the launch of Blue Stars Museums, a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and 2,000 American museums to offer free admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel, including National Guard and Reserve and their families, from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

The program provides families an opportunity to enjoy the nation’s cultural heritage and learn more about their new communities after completing a military move. In conjunction with this program, the Cape May County Museum will feature a special exhibit of uniforms from its military collection, beginning with a uniform from the Spanish American War up to the current war in Afghanistan.

‘Mosaic Memories’ art project set

Community Art Projects invites locals and visitors to leave their mark in Ocean City and become part of a future Community Art Projects art installation.

Grab a few friends or relatives and paint a tile at Glazed Over Studio, 854 Asbury Ave., through Oct. 15. Tiles are 4¼ inches and can be painted with any design or family name. Prices are $20 per tile or two for $35 to “Create a Mosaic Memory.” Painted tiles, artistically placed in a significant sculpture, will be placed in a central Ocean City location.

O.C. Fishing Club plans tournament

The Ocean City Fishing Club will conclude a nearly yearlong centennial celebration in October with a three-day surf-fishing tournament that is expected to draw as many as 100 East Coast teams competing for total cash awards of $20,000.

The competition will take place Oct. 17-19 along the beaches of Ocean City. All the teams must include six members; there will be no individual entries.

The volunteers at CONTACT Cape-Atlantic offer free daily phone calls to say hello and check that all is well to help the disabled, elderly, and isolated citizens of Atlantic and Cape May counties who want to continue living independently. Volunteers also are needed to make the calls.
