Lee a finalist
Freeholder Kristine Gabor and the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders announced that Elaine Lee, RN, BS, a nurse at Cape May County Health Department, was recognized as a finalist for the 2012 March of Dimes Nurse of the Year Award at a ceremony held Jan. 31, in Eatontown.
The March of Dimes’ Nurse of the Year Award recognizes nurses involved in the care of children with special needs. Lee, who has worked at the Health Department for more than 11 years, is the coordinator of the Special Needs Grant for Cape May County. The program helps parents to navigate through the system and identify resources available for their family.

Support group set
Rutgers Cooperative Extension’s Family and Community Health Sciences Department will hold a discussion session titled Parenting the Second Time Around: Anger Management for the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Building, 355 Courthouse-South Dennis Road in Cape May Court House.
Joseph Davidow, Ed.D., licensed New Jersey psychologist, will lead the discussion about anger issues of family members and ways of coping with them. Thrift store to hold sale
Volunteers in Medicine of Cape May County (VIM) opened a thrift store last fall to generate money to offset the cost of care at the Medical Clinic. VIMspirations is now in its fourth month and continues to do well. Donations have been so strong that VIM is planning their first sale for President’s Day Weekend.
On Feb. 15, 16 and 17 shoppers will be sold a blue bag for $5 and can take home as much stuff as fits in the bag. The store will be stocked with winter clothes for the sale. VIMspirations is located at 600 Park Blvd., West Cape May next door to Artizan’s Salon and Spa, and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays. State-funded spay neuter program available
Spaces are available now for state sterilization funding program available to qualified residents. The program begins on April 1 (while funds last) at various participating veterinary offices in the state to help qualified residents spay or neuter their pets for only $10. Because spaces go quickly, Shore Veterinarians is encouraging residents to sign up early in February for the program. Shore Veterinarians participates in this state program at all four of their locations in Seaville, Williamstown, Hammonton and Egg Harbor Township.
Residents in the state can spay and neuter their pets at various veterinary offices for only $10 if they qualify for the state sterilization funding program. These residents must receive one of the following: food stamps, Medicaid, general public assistance, rental assistance, aid to families with dependent children, Lifeline Utility Credit, Tenants Lifeline Assistance, Supplemental Security Income, or Pharmaceutical Assistance to aged & Disabled.

Roller skating hours extended
Cape May Convention Hall will extend roller skating hours on Fridays and Sundays due to the overwhelming success of the roller skating program. Roller skating sessions will now run for five hours offering patrons more flexibility with when they want to arrive.
Doors for roller skating will open at 4 p.m. and close at 9 p.m. And Sundays, roller skating will begin at noon and conclude at 5 p.m. Saturdays will remain the same with two two hour sessions. The first session is from 1 to 3 p.m. and the second session is from 4 to 6 p.m. Skaters are encouraged to visit capemayrecreation.org for holiday hours and possible time changes.
Guests may bring their own standard or in-line skates or they can rent them from our facility. Admission and skate rentals are based on two hour allotments of time. Admission fee is $5 per person. Skate rental is $2 for traditional skates and $4 for in-line skates. Admission for nonskaters is $2.
Roller skating at Cape May Convention Hall will continue through Sunday, April 7 and then resume in December for the winter season.

Lego fun at 4-H
The Rutgers Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development Program and the Cape May County Library have teamed up to offer a free day of Lego themed fun from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Lockwood Youth Center, 355 Courthouse-South Dennis Road, Cape May Court House. The afternoon will include hands-on activities, screenings of Brick Films and a Lego Contest.
Legopalooza is designed to offer kids a taste of the 4-H fair experience; including opportunities to showcase original work, enjoy hands-on activities and receive recognition for their efforts. Activities will be offered by staff from the Cape May County Library, 4-H staff and volunteers and 4-H Teen Ambassadors. The day will include screenings of stop motion “Brick” films, Lego Mindstorms Robotics activities, and stations with Lego Games, Lego inspired print making and brick activities designed to engage kids in engineering challenges.
Participants are invited to bring their own Lego creations to showcase and enter in a Lego Contest. The contest includes two categories for four different age groups. The “Kit Build” category is for entries built according to instructions. “Kit Bash” entries are those that involved original construction or design. Age groups will include 5 to 8, 9 to 12, 13 to 16, and 17 to adult. Participation awards will be offered as well as awards for each age group. Group entries can be entered, but should be entered in the age group of the oldest participant.
In order to help plan for the event, registration is requested. Arrangements can be made to drop off Lego entries in advance of the event. Citizens police academy planned
The Cape May County Public Safety Training Center will hold a Citizens Police Academy from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Mondays, Feb. 25 through April 23 at the Cape May County Public Safety Training Center, 171 Crest Haven Road, Cape May Court House.
All citizens are invited to sign-up for the Academy which will provide an overview of the law-enforcement function. Citizens will have a chance to see how police are trained and how they respond to various situations. This is a hands-on academy that gives citizens an opportunity to participate in police operations in simulated situations.
Topics include: Overview of the Criminal Justice system, Police Training Requirements, The Police Mission, Budget/Manpower, Communications, Criminal/Juvenile System, Crime Prevention and Crime Scene Investigation, Traffic Related Activities, Use of Force, K-9 Usage, Domestic Violence, CPR and AED certifications, SWAT Team Demonstrations and Internal Affairs.

Boninfante earns Star award
The Southern New Jersey Freeholders’ Association (SNJFA) announced that Cape May County Communications Director Lenora Boninfante is a 2013 recipients of the “Southern Star” Award.
The “Southern Star” Award began in 1996 to recognize members of the SNJFA who not only give distinguished service in their home county, but who also foster the cooperative spirit among the eight member County Governments and affiliated organizations.
Boninfante has been part of the Southern New Jersey Freeholders’ Association since 2001. She serves as Communications Director for the County of Cape May, but it is through her service to the Southern New Jersey Freeholders’ Association as Recording Secretary that she has helped to unite and strengthen the eight southern counties.
Boninfante worked in the private sector for 20 years before coming to county government twelve years ago. With her background in Communications and a Masters Degree in Public Administration, she strives to bring to the people the information they need to understand and judge the activities of their governments and public officials. To date, the Communications Office in Cape May County, under her leadership, has won 16 National Awards for their public information efforts.
Disaster assistance available
Cape May County residents who had damage from Hurricane Sandy can still register for assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The deadline to register with FEMA has been extended. Survivors of Hurricane Sandy now have until March 1 to register for disaster assistance.
People with storm losses in Cape May County and all counties in New Jersey can register at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or via smartphone or tablet at m.fema.gov. Registration also is available by calling 800-621-3362, TTY 800-462-7585 or 711/VRS. The toll-free telephone numbers operate from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. seven days a week. FEMA disaster assistance for individuals and families can include money for rental assistance, essential home repairs, personal property and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance.
The SBA has also set March 1 as the date for homeowners, renters and business owners to complete and return SBA disaster loan applications. If you receive an SBA loan application after registering with FEMA, you are required to complete the SBA Loan application and return it by March 1. It is important to submit the SBA paperwork by the deadline. If offered a loan, an applicant will have up to six months to decide if they want to accept the loan. This is beneficial if insurance claims are not processed timely. Also if it is determined after March 1 that a loan is needed, but the paperwork has not been submitted, it will be too late to qualify for a loan.

Chamber’s awards dinner set
The Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce’s 2012 Citizen of the Year and Business Beautification Awards Dinner had been postponed due to Super Storm Sandy. The Dinner has been rescheduled and is being combined the Chamber’s annual Board of Directors Installation Dinner. The awards will be presented at the Chamber’s dinner Feb. 21 at Greate Bay Country Club in Somers Point.
The Citizen of the Year Award had been renamed, Citizen of the Decade, and will be presented to Ocean City Publicist, Mark Soifer, 20 years after he was named Citizen of the year. Soifer has been promoting Ocean City for more than 40 years and is the creator of many Ocean City signature events such as the Miss Crustacean Pageant and Weird Week.

Playwriting get-way set
The award-winning East Lynne Theater Company and The Henry Sawyer Inn still have a few openings left for their special “Playwriting Get-Away” on March 1 and 2. Participants are encouraged to create plays, at least 10-minutes in length, during three workshop sessions, culminating in readings of these by ELTC performers. This workshop is geared for those who have written plays, as well as those who have always wanted to try their hand at writing a play.

Tickets on sale for concert series
Tickets for the Jersey Shore Pops Summer Concert Series are now on sale. Tickets will be available online and directly at the Middle Township Performing Arts Center Box Office, 212 Bayberry Road, Cape May Court House.
The concert series will include eight concerts with a focus on international guest stars from around the world. The series will open at the Middle Township Performing Arts Center the last weekend in June. Dennis Twp. offers services for special-needs students
Parents who suspect their child may have a disability, can get free help from their local school district’s Child Study Team. The Dennis Township School District is organizing a Child Find campaign to assist in the identification of unserved/underserved youth with a delay or disability from birth through 21 years of age.
A child may be eligible for services and accommodations under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Under Section 504, a person with a disability is one who either “has a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities; has a record of such impairment; or is regarded as having such impairment.” Section 504 requires school districts to provide a free appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment (LRE) to all eligible students with disabilities. If you suspect that your child may have a disability and would like more information about the district’s Section 504 policies and procedures, call 609-861-2821 ext. 220 or 221.
Information may also be obtained about early intervention services and special education programs throughout New Jersey. Futsal championship set
The United States Futsal Federation will host the Northeast Futsal Regional Championship 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 16 to 18 at the Wildwoods Convention Center. Futsal is a variant of soccer which is played on a smaller area and mainly played indoors. Futsal requires two teams with five players each, one of those players being the goalkeeper.
Unlimited substitutes per team are permitted, but unlike some other forms of indoor soccer, the game is played on a hard court surface delimited by lines; walls or boards are not used. Futsal is also played with a smaller ball with less bounce than a regular soccer ball. The rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces.

Atlantic Cape Community College will offer a variety of professional development workshops this spring for individuals interested in enhancing their skill sets and advance their careers.
The Hypnotherapy Certification Course is designed for those who want to improve their lives, start a new career, supplement their income or enhance their counseling or health care practice, beginning Feb. 21.

OSHA Electrical Review is a 10-hour certification course that concentrates on OSHA electrical compliance, April 8 and 9.
Personal Trainer Certification Phase II will teach personal trainers how to work with special populations suffering from diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity, as well as working with children, April 27.

The Nature Center of Cape May will offer the Randy Nuessle Memorial Scholarship Fund for a third year. This work-study program provides recipients with a $3,000 award each year throughout four years of college. Administered by Nature Center Director, Gretchen Whitman, the fund seeks to promote a deeper understanding and awareness of the natural sciences while encouraging responsible stewardship of our shared natural resources.
The fund was established by long term New Jersey Audubon members and volunteers, Barbara and Warren Nuessle in honor of their 16 year-old son, Randy, who died in 1984 of Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy.
Since this is a work study scholarship, selected students are obligated to serve as interns during the school year or summer for a total of 150 hours. In addition, the Nature Center staff serves as the intern supervisors and assist students and their schools in obtaining college credit under the school’s cooperative education programs.
Eligibility for the fund is limited to graduating seniors from designated high schools in Cape May County. A committee, composed of members representing lhe Nature Center of Cape May and the community of Cape May, ensures that selected students have demonstrated academic excellence while giving special consideration to those with financial need.

Foundation receives donation
The Atlantic Cape Community College Foundation received a donation from South Jersey Gas customers for the School Counts scholarship fund to benefit Atlantic and Cape May County students who have earned the School Counts certificate.
South Jersey Gas President Jeffrey DuBois presented a check for $47,628 to Atlantic Cape Community College President Dr. Peter Mora. The funds were raised by South Jersey Gas customers who donated $1 to the School Counts program via their gas bills.

Raffle tickets available
Three lucky winners will share up to $15,000 in the 2013 Atlantic Cape Community College Restaurant Gala 50/50 Raffle. The raffle is sponsored by the Atlantic Cape Community College Foundation, and proceeds benefit student scholarships and Atlantic Cape Foundation operations.
Only 300 tickets will be sold at $100 each. Three cash prizes will be awarded, including: $9,000, first prize; $4,500, second prize; and $1,500, third prize. Dollar amounts are based on all 300 tickets being sold. The winning tickets will be drawn at the March 14 Restaurant Gala at Bally’s Atlantic City.

The Ocean City Arts Center will host the Annual Juried Photography Show throughout April. Work will be accepted March 11 through 26 and must be hand-delivered to the Arts Center at 1735 Simpson Ave. in Ocean City. Traditional photography and Digital/Computer Generated photography will be eligible.
All elements of digital work must be created by the photographer. As many as four photographs may be submitted with an entry fee of $18 for each piece. Photographs must be framed with glass or plexi-glass and be ready to hang with wire properly attached. Overall frame size should not exceed 24 x 28 inches.
Prizes are Best of Show at $200; Second Place at $150; Third Place at $100 and Two Honorable Mentions at $50 each. Polar plunge set in Sea Isle
Sea Isle City’s 19th annual Polar Bear Plunge will once again be enhanced by a variety of activities, including a Costume Contest, a 5K Run / 1.5-mile Walk for Autism and four “Royal Family” competitions that will determine this year’s Polar Bear Prince, Princess, King and Queen.
In addition to each receiving valuable prizes, including crowns, sashes and iPad Minis, the members of Sea Isle’s 2013 Polar Bear Royal Family will lead thousands of plungers into the Atlantic Ocean during the weekend’s main event Feb. 16. They will also be invited to participate in other events throughout the coming year.
The 2013 Polar Bear Prince and Princess Contests, which are sponsored by the Sea Isle City Chamber of Commerce and Revitalization, will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 15 under the Family Tent at LaCosta Complex, JFK Boulevard and Landis Avenue. Prince and Princess contestants must be 12 to 16 years old and must wear appropriate attire during the competitions. Judging will be based on appearance and personality. The 2013 Polar Bear King and Queen Competitions will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 15 immediately following the Prince and Princess Contests. Bridges conference planned
The Partners for Connections in Education (P4CE) will be presenting the Bridges Conference 2013: Connecting Higher Ed and K-12 May 8 to 10 at the Cape May Convention Center. The Bridges Conference will showcase unique partnerships and projects that are helping higher education and K-12 to work together on enhancing the continuum of available educational opportunities for students of all ages.
The conference will feature many innovate programs that look beyond the traditional institutional role on behalf of high student achievement and the development of creative and innovative students through economically feasible programs and projects between colleges and K-12 school. The conference will also feature Keynote Sessions from Hall Davidson from the Discovery Educator Network, Steve Zalot from Apple Computers and Melanie Andrich from Eduventures. Special Topic Sessions and small group “hands on” presentations will also be available throughout the conference. The Stockton College Education Center will offer a series of one-day professional development courses for K-12 educators this February through May. The first class is Feb. 15. The Stockton College Education Center is in the new addition to the Sam Azeez Museum of Woodbine Heritage of Stockton College, located at 610 Washington Ave. in Woodbine.
The courses are convenient for teachers in Cape May, Cumberland and Atlantic County school districts. Participants are asked to bring their own device (BYOD) for certain courses. Gardening workshops set
Pat Sutton will share her 30 plus years of wildlife gardening expertise in a series of five workshops designed for property owners from March 2 to 23. These five sessions will be in-depth, fact filled, learning opportunities that will be site specific to each gardener’s situation. Although each workshop can stand on its own, each is designed to serve as a foundation for the next. In addition to valuable handouts, workshops include question and answer sessions, working lunches, open discussions, and site visits.
The workshop topics, dates and locations are Create a backyard habitat for wildlife, March 2; Create a pollinator garden for butterflies, hummingbirds, moths, bees and more, March 3; Create a wildflower meadow and wildlife pond, March 9; Battlestar Backyardia — Battling the alien invader and how to deal with invasive species, March 16. These first four workshops will be held at the Cape May Bird Observatory for Research and Education, 600 Route 47 North in Cape May Court House. The March 23 topic will be Landscape Design with wildlife in mind and will be held at the Nature Center of Cape May, 1600 Delaware Avenue, in Cape May.

Volunteers to be honored
Martin Pagliughi, director of the Cape May County Emergency Management Communications Center announced that the 2013 Governor’s Jefferson Awards will honor volunteers in 20 categories, including multiple awards for those who responded to Hurricane Sandy.
Pagliughi urges all Cape May County communities to take the time to nominate one of the many volunteers in your town that went above and beyond during Hurricane Sandy response and recovery operations.

Hurricane groups formed
Hurricane Sandy recovery operations are continuing throughout the state and Long Term Recovery Groups, or LTRG, have been established in order to support those operations. In coordination and support from Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters, the FEMA and State Voluntary Agency Liaison’s, and the Governor’s Office of Volunteerism. LTRG have been established in Cape May County and in many other areas.
These groups, and the people and organizations involved, will serve an important purpose as we look to the long term for helping those in need. LTRG’s will help with providing resources to victims, disaster case management, donations and any other support network that victims may need for the long term.
Also, the state’s Donations Management Plan has been activated and a state warehouse has been opened in Mercer County. If you are aware of specific needs of victims email them to DMCC@gov.state.nj.us at which time the state’s Donations Management Team will try to find a match with items available in the warehouse. Rabies clinic set
The annual free rabies clinic will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. March 12 at the Cape May Fire House, Franklin and Washington streets, Cape May. The clinic is for all dog and cat owners in Cape May, Cape May Point and West Cape May.
Art exhibit planned
The Art On Asbury Gallery will host the “Anything Goes” themed show, along with their annual Arc student exhibition and sale in February. The show was previously scheduled in December, however, due to Hurricane Sandy, it had to be postponed until the “Art on Asbury” gallery reopened.
Arc of Atlantic County students, with the help of Art on Asbury artists, work throughout the year to create paintings, drawings and greeting cards for the show. The theme is dogs. A portion of the proceeds will go directly to the Arc artist.

Spay/neuter clinic set
The Animal Alliance of Cape May County Inc. (AACMC) has come up with an innovative way to get the Wildwoods’ feral and stray cats sterilized and thus humanely manage free roaming cat populations in their communities. AACMC will take spay/neuter surgeries on the road by launching a MASH (Mobile Animal Sterilization Hospital) clinic on March 3 at the Holly Beach Fire House, New Jersey and Montgomery Avenues, Wildwood thanks to a $22,000 grant from PetSmart Charities.
A team of veterinary technicians, seasoned volunteers and a licensed veterinarian experienced in high volume spay/neuter will set up the clinic. The surgeries, which include a rabies vacccination, are free for those caring for free roaming/stray cats in the 08260 zip code. The fee for pet cats and stray/free roaming cats for all other municipalities is $55. Appointments are required for all cats

Program set for seniors
Cape Assist will sponsor six classes designed to teach those 51 years and older to become healthy and stay that way as they age.
Funded by a grant from The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, the Wellness Education program classes will cover a variety of topics including making healthy lifestyle choices, behaviors to avoid in order to stay healthy, safe practices regarding alcohol, prescription, and over-the-counter medications, and simple tools to take charge of your own healthcare and navigate the healthcare system.
The goal of the Wellness Education Workshops, also known as WISE, is to extend good physical and mental health and to prevent or delay out-of-home placement for older adults.
The sessions are scheduled for noon to 2 p.m. Tuesdays through Feb. 26 at the Dennis Township Senior Center, 571 Petersburg Road, Dennisville. Lunch will be provided. All those completing the six sessions will receive a $50 gift card at the end of the program.

Museum receives funding
The Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum, located at the Cape May Airport, recently received funding from the 1772 Foundation Grant Program administered by the New Jersey Historic Trust. The $15,000 grant requires a 100 percent match on behalf of the museum. The total project cost of $30,000 will enable the museum to repair and restore damaged areas of the roof on the hangar’s northwest side. Restoration work should be complete by March 1.

Police academy seeks candidates
The Cape May County Police Academy is accepting applications from aspiring police officers for the Alternate Route Training Program scheduled to start the Basic Course for Police Officers on Aug. 26. Applications will be available March 1 through April 30.
This program, offers would-be-officers a better chance at employment as they become eligible for full police certification when they graduate. The program is the only residential based academy in the state of New Jersey for municipal officers requiring them to live on base while they train. The tuition cost is $3,300 which includes instruction, lodging, meals, ammunition, and textbooks.
Alternate Route Applicants must be 18 or older and have 60 college credits by September 2013 or two years of full time military service. To be eligible for selection, the candidates must pass written, physical, oral and psychological exams as well as a background check.

Electric company to donate smoke alarms
Atlantic City Electric will donate 1,080 smoke alarms to fire marshals in southern New Jersey as part of the company’s Emergency Services Partnership Program. The smoke alarms will be given in January to eight counties within Atlantic City Electric’s service area. The donation provides resources for county fire marshals who give the smoke alarms to New Jersey residents who need them.
The donation includes 80 smoke alarms designed to help protect residents who are hard of hearing. These smoke alarms emit a bright strobe light and high-decibel audible alarm to alert people to the presence of smoke.
Harris Communications of Minnesota and Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse provided the donated alarms at a reduced cost. Since 2000, Atlantic City Electric has donated 21,300 smoke alarms and 720 special needs smoke alarms to fire safety officials in southern New Jersey.
Mural to be auctioned for charity
Local artist David Macomber recently completed an 8-by-20-foot mural at Morey’s Piers to benefit Hurricane Sandy relief efforts at the Jersey Shore. The completed mural will be separated into about 30 segments and will be auctioned to raise money for New Jersey shore towns that were hit by Hurricane Sandy. Nature center becomes seasonal
New Jersey Audubon’s Nature Center of Cape May is operating as a seasonal center.
The center is now closed to the public and will reopen for public access April 15 and immediately commence a full schedule of spring programs, as well as special activities and events such as Harbor Fest, Paddle for a Purpose and Harbor Safaris.
Sanctuary Director Gretchen Whitman has issued an appeal to the local community, residents, businesses and friends of the center for support, both moral and financial, and ideas for the future. 4-H to produce T-shirt
The Cape May County 4-H Foundation recently voted to produce one official 2013 4-H Fair T-shirt.
The T-shirt will feature logos of sponsoring companies and businesses and include a graphic design on the front about the 2013 4-H fair theme, “Belong, believe, achieve.” It will be the only 4-H T-shirt offered at the fair. Funds raised from shirt sales and sponsorship will support the Cape May County 4-H Youth Development Program. Fair sponsorships, which include a corporate logo featured on the back of the official 2013 shirt, begin at $250. Additional sponsorships are available for $500 and $1,000. 4-H Members, alumni and partners are invited to submit ideas for the 4-H graphic to be featured on the front of the T-shirt. Socks for Seniors under way
Cape May County’s seniors are going to be a little warmer this holiday season thanks to Cape May Point resident Christopher South, who brought the Socks for Seniors program to Cape May County.
South presented the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders with a sample of socks to be distributed to more than 400 seniors at Crest Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and those registered in the county’s homebound meals program. “Socks For Seniors” is a national program active in more than 250 cities. South’s Cape May County program expects to collect more than 500 socks by Christmas.

The annual CONTACT Cape-Atlantic Triathlon/Duathlon will take place through Feb. 18.
Participants have a month to complete the event: a 2.4-mile swim in a pool, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26-mile run. Triathletes do all three events. Duathletes do two events.
The registration donation is $30 and is co-sponsored by the Ocean City Aquatic and Fitness Center. Competitors can substitute gym events for the swimming, biking and running events by documenting how many laps they swim or aquasize classes they take for the swim leg of the triathlon; how many miles they bike, step or row for the bicycling portion; and how many miles they walk/run, use the elliptical or take aerobics classes for the marathon section. Everyone who enters receives a T-shirt, and everyone who finishes will receive an award. A list of triathlon finishers will be posted and an awards ceremony will take place Feb. 23 at the Ocean City Aquatic and Fitness Center, 18th and Simpson Avenue, Ocean City.
The triathlon is a fund-raiser for CONTACT Cape-Atlantic, a nonprofit volunteer group that makes daily telephone reassurance calls to the elderly and disabled in Atlantic and Cape May counties. Sandy Relief Fund established for students
The Atlantic Cape Community College Foundation has established the Sandy Relief Fund for Atlantic Cape Students to collect emergency funds for Atlantic Cape Community College students affected by Hurricane Sandy.
More than 1,900 Atlantic Cape students live on the barrier island communities assaulted by the storm on Oct. 29. Student evacuees are now returning to wrecked homes and vehicles, and destroyed computer equipment, school supplies and textbooks.
The Sandy Relief Fund for Atlantic Cape Students will provide assistance for students who need to replace books, computer equipment, clothing and food, and to cover commuting costs and other necessities. Cape May County Freeholder Director Gerald M. Thornton invites the residents of Cape May County to join the 144 members of the Cape May County Medical Reserve Corps.
Medical Reserve Corps units are made up of locally based volunteers who assist their communities during emergencies, such as an influenza epidemic, a chemical spill or an act of terrorism. MRC volunteers include medical and public health professionals such as physicians, nurses, pharmacists, mental health professionals, dentists, veterinarians and epidemiologists. Community members such as interpreters, chaplains, office workers and legal advisers can fill vital support positions.

Low cost shingles vaccine available
The county is still offering the shingles vaccine at low cost for residents who don’t have health insurance or who have health insurance that doesn’t pay for the vaccine. There is no charge for the shingles vaccine itself. Uninsured and underinsured residents only pay a $15 administration fee.
A single dose of zoster (shingles) vaccine is recommended for adults 60 years of age and older, whether or not the patient reported a prior episode of shingles. Shingles is a localized, generally painful rash that occurs most frequently among older adults and immunocompromised people. It is caused by reactivation of the chickenpox virus.
For those who have health insurance but are unable to obtain the shingles vaccine at their doctor’s office, the Department of Health can administer the vaccine to them for $175. Residents must pay for the vaccine out of pocket and submit the cost for reimbursement to their insurance carrier (i.e. Medicare Part D). Residents are encouraged to contact their insurer in advance to determine whether the vaccine is covered.
The shingles vaccination program is by appointment only and the patient needs a prescription from their physician to receive the vaccine. To schedule an appointment for the shingles vaccine, call 609-465-1200.
County high school has student openings
Cape May County High School, which serves students with disabilities from Cape May and surrounding counties, announces openings in its Community Based Instruction Program.
This program is designed for 18- to 21-year-old students who have not yet graduated from high school, but have completed the academic requirements for graduation and have some level of independence. Students are placed in one of three community partner worksites, and are mentored by a worksite employee with the support of a special education teacher and aide. School registering students
The Kulanu School of Jewish Studies is registering students in grades seven through 11 for the 2012-13 school year. This year, Kulanu classes will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays at Congregation Beth Judah, 700 Swarthmore Ave., Ventnor.
Students do not need to be affiliated with a synagogue to attend. The Kulanu School of Jewish Studies offers a wide range of programs. Classes cover topics from Jewish ethics to culture, history, spirituality and the arts. Programs also foster a lifelong connection to the land of Israel. Electives offered range from Israeli dance to choir, yoga, art, Jewish cooking and Jews in American Film. There also is an optional Panim el Panim program, which brings Jewish teens to Washington, D.C., to explore service, advocacy and philanthropy. In addition, students entering their senior year of high school may attend the Morim Teacher Prep program through Kulanu.

Angelus chorus seeks members
The Angelus Chorus is looking for new members. It is a choral group that sings throughout Cape May County during April, May, and December. The chorus rehearses at the Middle Township High School during the school year and perform concerts in the spring and winter seasons.

Volunteers sought for tax program
The Retired Senior Volunteer Program is seeking people to be part of the Volunteer Tax Assistance Program. More than 950 Cape May County residents with incomes less than $50,000 received free help filing their 2011 tax returns by volunteers through VITA. To continue this service, more volunteers are being recruited for training.
If you can use a computer and are available at least one day per week February through April 2013, you are encouraged to join. Training will be provided on federal tax law by Jackie Piper of the IRS and retired CPA and VITA volunteer Ed McCaughey, and New Jersey tax law will be taught by a state Tax Office employee in January. All materials will be furnished by the IRS, but you are welcome to use your own laptop.

Atlantic Cape Community College delivers corporate training programs and targeted consulting to businesses or organizations to help employees meet the demands of an increasingly challenging and competitive market.
All professional development courses and computer workshops can be customized to a business or organization’s specifications. In addition, Atlantic Cape’s Basic-Skills Workforce Training Program offers free basic skills training to employees of Atlantic and Cape May County businesses through a literacy grant from the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Employees can receive basic skills training in English as a second language, written and verbal communication, computer applications, mathematics and measurement and customer service. Customized classes for groups of 10 or more can be arranged. The classes are free to all private-sector and nonprofit employers in the state; however, employees taking the classes must be paid at their regular hourly rate while in training. Business owners are eligible only if they pay taxes into the Unemployment Insurance Fund.
Atlantic Cape will offer several basic skills training sessions at the Institute for Service Excellence at the Hamilton Mall, 4403 Black Horse Pike, Mays Landing and at the Cape May County Campus, 341 Court House-South Dennis Road, Cape May Court House. Head Start seeks preschoolers
The Atlantic Human Resources Inc. Head Start and Early Head Start program is recruiting preschool children for the 2012-13 program. There is no cost to families who qualify.

In collaboration with the Nature Center of Cape May Sanctuary Director Gretchen Whitman, longtime members and volunteers Barbara and Warren Nuessle have established the Randy Nuessle Memorial Scholarship Fund as a work-study program, where recipients are provided with a $3,000 award each year through four years of college.
Administered by the Nature Center of Cape May, the fund seeks to promote a deeper understanding and awareness of natural sciences while encouraging responsible stewardship of natural resources. A selected student is obligated to serve as an intern during the summer or school year for a total of 240 hours. Nature Center staff serve as intern supervisors and work with the student and their school to obtain college credit under the school’s cooperative education programs. Eligibility is limited to graduating seniors from designated high schools in Cape May County. A committee of members representing local high schools, Atlantic Cape Community College, the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, the Nature Center of Cape May and the community of Cape May, ensures that selected students have demonstrated academic excellence while giving special consideration to those with financial need.

Fresh Air Home seeks aid
The Children’s Fresh Air Home, a faith-based program in North Wildwood, has hosted more than 20,000 children in its 115-year history.
The support of their alumni is vital to the Century Campaign, which addresses major capital improvements the home requires. With this campaign, the Fresh Air Home is committed to expanding and improving the structure, to continue to serve children for another century. Donations to the Century Campaign will go toward effort to raise the $1 million dollars needed to complete renovations. Reassurance calls offered
The volunteers at CONTACT Cape-Atlantic offer free daily phone calls to say hello and check that all is well to help the disabled, elderly, and isolated citizens of Atlantic and Cape May counties who want to continue living independently. Anyone interested in receiving CONTACT calls, or who know someone who might be, call Jennifer Goudie at 609-823-0762 in Atlantic County or 609-463-4564 in Cape May County.
Volunteers also are needed to make the calls. Volunteers manage calls in 2½-hour shifts — 8:30 to 11 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m. This service is provided daily from phone centers in Margate and Cape May Court House. Counseling offered in Wildwood
Through Cape Assist, a local prevention program, counseling services for substance abuse are offered at Cape Assist’s main office, 3819 New Jersey Ave., Wildwood.
The program will take a personalized approach to client care, understanding that clients come needing help in changing addictive behaviors. Cape Assist’s method to care is client-centered in the belief that true change comes from the internal motivation of the individual. Appointments can be made by calling 609-522-5960. While some services are free, there is a small fee for some services with a sliding scale rate for those with low income, and some grant funding is available.
