Avalon receives award

The borough of Avalon recently was presented with the New Jersey Recreation and Park Association’s Excellence in Design award during a recognition dinner held at the NJRPA’s annual conference at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City on March 5. The borough received the award for its September 11th Memorial Plaza, which was dedicated during a special ceremony Sept. 11, 2012.

The memorial plaza was designed by the Taylor Design Group, Inc. of Mount Laurel, New Jersey, and largely constructed by the Avalon Department of Public Works. Donations by members of the community completely financed the construction of the plaza. The memorial plaza is located directly to the north of Avalon’s Veterans Plaza, located at 21st Street and Dune Drive.

In September 2011, Avalon formally received a 1,800 pound section of I-beam from the World Trade Center in New York City for use in the new memorial plaza.

The plaza includes a scored concrete walkway that leads visitors to a circular walk area that includes a small wall that with bronze lettering that reads, “All that is good will endure.” Bronze shadow inlays depict the timeline of the major events on Sept. 11, 2001.

Those events are set in the pavement to correspond with the shadow pattern cast by the I-beam on Sept. 11 of each year.

Museum uses new technology

Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum recently completed the installation of strategically placed QR codes throughout historic Hangar No. 1. Since its inception as an aviation museum in 1997, NAS Wildwood has integrated technology into the museum experience. The codes consist of black modules (square dots) on a grid with a white background that are easily scanned by smartphones.

After the codes are scanned, information will be uploaded to the guest’s phone detailing background history on the Hangar’s interactive displays, exhibits and aircraft. While the concept is not original, NASW is believed to be the only aviation museum in the United States utilizing this technology.

NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum boasts over 26 aircraft displays as well as exhibits of military memorabilia, engines, photographs, interactive exhibits that allow visitors to discover the science of flight and more. Built by the U.S. Navy in 1943, it served as a dive-bomber training facility. The museum is dedicated to the 42 airmen who perished while training at NASW.

Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum is located in Historic Hangar No. 1 at the Cape May Airport in Lower Township. Cape May Airport was formerly Naval Air Station Wildwood, which served as a World War II dive-bomber training center.

For a complete list of programs and special events, contact Bruce Fournier at 609-886-8787, by email at bruce-nasw@comcast.net or see usnasw.org.
