Law fair planned

The Cape May County Bar Association will host its fifth annual Law Fair in conjunction with the Cape May County Superior Court from 9 a.m. to noon May 3 at the Cape May County Courthouse in Cape May Court House.

There will be a variety of attorneys, county agency representatives and court division representatives and a fair in the back lobby of the Cape May County Courthouse. The Cape May County Bar Association will also hold a special award ceremony and reception at 9 a.m. for the Cape May County High School Mock Trial champions, Middle Township High School.

Girls weekend set

Twice each year, bargain-conscious ladies gather in Sea Isle City to take advantage of the many discounts and special offers available during the resort’s annual “Girls Weekend” shopping events, which are hosted by the Sea Isle City Chamber of Commerce and Revitalization. 2013 Spring Girls Weekend will be held from April 12-14 at eateries, boutiques, salons and other businesses.

ACA classes open

If you’ve always loved to cook or are ready to make a career change, register for fall 2013 classes at the Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College. Registration will be offered based on the number of credits earned at the time of registration, beginning April 15, at all Atlantic Cape campuses and online. Credits must have been completed, not in progress. ACA classes will begin Aug. 26.

Registration hours are weekdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with extended hours to 6:30 p.m., April 15-18 and April 22. Registration begins April 15 for students with at least 48 credits, April 16 for students with at least 32 credits, April 17 for students with at least 17 credits, April 18-19 for returning students, and April 22 for all students (open registration).

School collects food for pantry

Members of Team Mercy, Bishop McHugh Regional School’s ministry club, organized a Lenten outreach to benefit Holy Redeemer Food Pantry. Students from prekindergarten to eighth grade had a competition to see which class could collect the most canned and nonperishable goods.

The school has collected more than 1,783 cans and nonperishable goods for the food pantry during this outreach alone. In a combined outreach, the CCD students from St. Joseph’s parish and members of Team Mercy assembled and donated 26 Easter baskets to the pantry.

Boating safety classes offered in Cold Spring

One-day classes on boating safety will take place April 6, May 4, June 1 and July 6 at Price Hall, Academy and Seashore roads, Cold Spring.

Students will receive a New Jersey Safe Boating Certificate, which is required by law for anyone 16 or older to operate a personal watercraft or vessel 12 feet or larger. Instructors are qualified personnel from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 86. The cost is $45. For reservations, schedules and more information, call 609-889-2236.

Free trees available

Atlantic City Electric is offering 2,000 free trees to customers through “Energy-Saving Trees,” an Arbor Day Foundation program that helps conserve energy and reduce energy bills through strategic tree planting. Atlantic City Electric customers can reserve their free trees at arborday.org/ace. The program will continue until all 2,000 trees are reserved. The 2- to 4-foot-tall trees will be delivered directly to customers at an ideal time for planting.

An online tool helps customers estimate the annual energy savings that will result from planting trees in the most strategic location near their homes or businesses. Customers can reserve two trees and are expected to care for and plant them in the location provided by the online tool. The types of trees offered include sugar maple, river birch, hackberry, American beech, bald cypress, white dogwood and Washington hawthorn.

Stone Harbor Police start safe-driving initiative

The Stone Harbor Police Department will participate through the summer in an initiative to reduce the number of drivers who operate a vehicle while talking on their cell phones, called “Turn the Phone Off.”

Turn the Phone Off is organized by the South Jersey Traffic Safety Alliance to educate drivers on the perils of distracted driving, using increased enforcement and storytelling. As a participant, Stone Harbor police will issue special cell phone warnings with directions to go online, watch a video and answer questions to avoid a ticket. The video, created by AT&T, features police officers, offenders, family members and friends recounting tearful stories about the consequences of texting and driving.

Talking and texting on a handheld cell phone while driving are common distractions for motorists, authorities say. New Jersey law bans the use of a handheld cell phone while driving; violators can face a substantial fine.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Administration says about 25 percent of all police-reported traffic accidents are due to driver distractions.

Slow Food Dinner returns April 18

For the third year, the Cape May Forum invites Cape May residents and spring visitors to a very special seasonal dinner.

Come out and dine green from 6 to 9 p.m. April 18 as Cape May Forum partners with Congress Hall and Slow Food South Jersey Shore to host “Forum on the Green: A Farm-to-Table Dinner at Congress Hall.”

Congress Hall's Farm-to-Table expert, executive chef Jeremy Einhorn, will use fresh ingredients from Beach Plum Farm from JAH’s Creation Organic Farms (CSA),and other local sources. Join CMF in the Congress Hall Ballroom at 6 p.m. for a five-course dinner, beginning with appetizers. At 7 p.m., guests will sit down to chowder, salads and entrees. A complimentary glass of wine from local vineyards will be offered with dinner, and there will be a cash bar.

Nature center holding plant sale, swap

The Nature Center of Cape May is holding its annual Spring Wildlife Plant Sale.

Orders must be received by April 30. Plants can be picked up from the Nature Center on May 11 and 12 at 1600 Delaware Ave.

The Nature Center will conduct its annual Backyard Habitat Plant Swap on April 27.This year’s theme is caterpillar host plants. Admission is one plant and a new or used garden tool. For admission, guests can take one “swap plant” home. Bring additional plants to swap on a 1:1 ratio. Plants may be dropped off April 27, and guests will receive a credit voucher to use April 28. GED testing set

GED testing for April at the Cape May County Technical School Distict will take place from 3:30 to 9 p.m. April 10-11 and 24-25. Mandatory pre-registration and orientation, which takes about a hour, for the April 10-11 session is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. April 9; and for the April 24-25 session is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. April 23 in the Tozour 100 building, 188 Crest Haven Road, office 145, Cape May Court House.

Test-takers must bring to the registration-orientation a money order or cash for $50 (no personal checks) and two forms of ID, one a government-issued photo ID, along with an original birth certificate or Social Security card. Sixteen- and 17-year-olds must present their “certificate of consent to participate” form at the time of registration. Contact the GED office for a form.

Registration begins April 15 at all Atlantic Cape Community College campuses for summer sessions and the fall semester. Registration will be offered to new and returning students at all Atlantic Cape campuses, and online, based on the number of credits earned at the time of registration. New category in Doo Dah Parade

A new category has been added to this year’s Doo Dah Parade, set for April 13 in Ocean City: best entry depicting the “We Are Ready” theme, emphasizing that Ocean City is prepared to accommodate its vacationers for the upcoming season.

Dietz and Watson, the parade’s major sponsor, has agreed to donate one of its hefty, semi-boneless smoked hams as the grand prize for the best entry. All entrants in the category will receive special certificates of appreciation. The parade’s grand marshal will be “Pretty, Perky, Peggy King,” one of the first 100 legends to have a star installed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. King began her career as a big band singer, then moved on to TV and movies before retiring to marry and raise a family. She has since returned to the spotlight to host a weekly radio show. King will perform at the Doo Dah Comedy Show on April 12 at the Music Pier.

Senior jamboree set in Avalon

The Cape May County Department of Aging and Disability Services will host the annual Senior Jamboree at 10 a.m. May 2 at the Avalon Community Center, 30th and the beach, Avalon.

The theme is “Kentucky Derby,” so feel free to wear your favorite fancy hat. Also, wear your dancing shoes, since there will be live entertainment and dancing. A free lunch will be served by staff of the Department of Aging and Cape May County high school students, and awards will be given to the Senior of the Year, female and male, and to the Organization of the Year.

Nominations sought for awards

The Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Department of Aging and Disability Services are accepting nominations for Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year and Outstanding Organization of the Year.

The Senior Citizen of the Year nominee must be a resident of Cape May County, be over the age of 60 and have contributed time to helping others. Organization of the Year nominees must be made up of volunteers who have contributed to the community and can be made up of seniors helping any age group or a younger group helping seniors.

Any church group, municipality or nonprofit organization is encouraged to submit their candidate’s name or the organization’s name, address and a short biography, listing their contributions to the community. The name, address and phone number of the person submitting the nomination must be included. The Department of Aging and Disability Services will present the Senior Citizen of the Year and Organization of the Year awards at the annual Senior Jamboree, which is held in May, in honor of Older Americans Month.

Youth invited to fishing camp

The Nature Center of Cape May and its parent organization, New Jersey Audubon, invite children over the age of 8 to participate in the second annual Guy Hill Buckelew Memorial youth Fishing Camp to run from 9 a.m. to noon Monday-Friday, Aug. 19-23, at the Nature Center, 1600 Delaware Ave., Cape May.

Guy Hill Buckelew was an avid angler and sportsman whose desire to see his love of fishing perpetuated to aspiring youthful anglers is realized by this camp. The camp will be supervised by retired teacher and local waterman Norman Smith. Camp leaders will instruct students in all phases of fishing including species identification, catch limits, angling methods and terminology, bait, tackle and rigging, safety precautions and even catch cleaning and preparation. Additional afternoon hours will be scheduled to accommodate a boat trip from 1 to 5 p.m. (weather permitting), a visit to this year’s Mid-Atlantic $500,000 tuna and marlin tournament to watch weigh-ins and tour the Big Tent.

The cost for this weeklong experience covers professional instruction, equipment, bait, T-shirts and other apparel, as well as charter boat fees. The cost is $200 for members and $250 for non-members. Scholarships are available based on need and for many U.S. Coast Guard dependent children, but camp size is limited. Hospital program recertified

Cape Regional Medical Center has announced the recertification of its Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

The goal of the cardiopulmonary team is to achieve and maintain the individual’s maximum level of independence and functioning in the community by reducing the effects of cardiac illness and pulmonary disease. Cape Regional Medical Center’s Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program received its initial certification in 2000 and recertifies every three years with the AACVPR.

College offers free skills training

Atlantic Cape Community College’s Basic-Skills Workforce Training Program offers free basic skills training to employees of Atlantic and Cape May County businesses through grant funding from the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development’s Skills4Jersey in partnership with the New Jersey Council of Community Colleges and New Jersey Business and Industry Association.

New courses include PowerPoint I, PowerPoint II, Spanish in the Workplace I and Spanish in the Workplace II.Employees can also receive basic skills training in English as a second language, written and verbal communication, computer applications (Windows, Microsoft Word and Excel 2003, 2007, 2010), mathematics and measurement and customer service. Customized courses for groups of 10 or more can be arranged.

The classes are free to all private sector and nonprofit employers in the state; however, employees taking the classes must be paid at their regular hourly rate while in training. Business owners are eligible only if they pay taxes into the Unemployment Insurance Fund.

Atlantic Cape’s basic skills training classes are offered on-site and at Atlantic Cape’s three locations at the Mays Landing Campus, 5100 Black Horse Pike; Worthington Atlantic City Campus, 1535 Bacharach Blvd.; and Cape May County Campus, 341 Court House-South Dennis Road in Cape May Court House.

Spring registration set for men’s softball

The Cape May County Men’s Softball League will begin May 6 and continue through mid-August.

The deadline for team rosters and league fees is April 12. All games are played midweek and typically start at 6:30 p.m. The regular season is followed by a league championship tournament. The recreational league is for men 17 and older who live in Cape May County. The league is operated by the City of Cape May Department of Tourism, Recreation and Civic Affairs. Walk-in and mail-in registrations will be accepted at the department, Cape May Convention Hall, 714 Beach Ave., Cape May. Convention Hall is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Ocean Galleries presents work by Dali, Miro

“The Poetic Visions: Dali and Miro” exhibition will include graphic works, lithographs, etchings, sculptures and other works of art by Salvador Dali and Joan Miro. Teams needed for dodgeball tournament

The Upper Township Soccer Association is sponsoring a Community Dodgeball Tournament from 6 to 10 p.m. April 19 at the Upper Township Community Center, 1790 Route 50, Tuckahoe.

The UTSA is seeking teams of five players. Teams will be divided into three divisions. Students in grades three-five will play from 6 to 7:30 p.m., grades six-eight will play from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m., and high school students and adults will play from 9 to 10 p.m. The cost is $30 per team of five players. Coed teams are encouraged. Spectators pay $2. Prizes will be given to the winning team in each division. Prizes also wil be awarded for the best-dressed themed team. Dog training classes set

The spring session of dog training classes will begin April 9 in West Cape May.

Classes include Puppy Kindergarten, Beginner Training, and Advanced Beginner/Canine Good Citizen. Sessions run for eight weeks at a cost of $80. All dogs, purebred or mixed breed, are invited to attend. Class size is limited, so register early. The next class session will begin in October.

Training is conducted by the Cape May County Dog Obedience Training Club, an American Kennel Club-affiliated group, who have held training programs for more than 35 years. The club also sponsors the annual Mutt Strut on the Cape May Promenade, scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 28 with a raindate of Sept. 29.

In Puppy Kindergarten, for dogs 3 to 6 months old, socializing dogs is emphasized, along with developing good manners and preventing unwanted behavior. Puppies are introduced to basic obedience such as walking on a loose leash, sit, down, come, and stay. The puppy training culminates with qualifying dogs receiving the AKC S.T.A.R.

Beginner Training, for dogs 6 months and older, instructs owners to teach their dogs the basic commands essential to everyday living. These dogs fine tune the puppy basics and learn to heel, leave-it, come when called, sit, down and stay. Dogs must be at least 6 months old, but dogs of all ages are invited to attend. These sessions work to develop good life skills and household manners and to build the bond between owners and their pets.

The Advanced Beginner class, for dogs completing Beginner Training, continues the work of beginner with more advanced commands and includes preparation for the AKC Canine Good Citizen test. The CGC program is dedicated to encouraging responsible dog ownership and is now an AKC title for both pure and mixed breed dogs registered with AKC.

College offers workshops

Atlantic Cape Community College will offer a variety of workshops this spring for those interested in enhancing their skills.

Bartending Training will cover all the essential topics of bartending. In only 40 hours, participants will become well versed in liquors, equipment and mixing techniques, pricing and business management, beverage control and customer service. The class will be held from April 8 to 19.

Sanitation Training will teach participants to recognize the responsibilities involving the prevention of food-borne illnesses. The ServSafe Food Safety Training Program will also help foodservice workers understand proper storage, food preparation, cleaning and sanitizing to ensure safe food handling, two sections, beginning April 19 and 30.

TIPs Certification trains participants to recognize potential alcohol-related problems and intervene to prevent alcohol-related tragedies. This workshop is ideal for those who deal with alcohol in a licensed establishment, three sections, beginning April 27, May 4 and May 7.

Scholarships available

Cape Regional Medical Center Auxiliary offers scholarships to high school seniors contemplating study in the health care field. The scholarship amounts will be determined by strong academic ability, involvement in school and civic activities, financial need, acceptance into an accredited college or university in the United States, and a panel interview. All awards will be paid directly to the university or college of choice after the first term studies are completed and checked.

Applications are available to any high school senior in Cape May County. Download the application at CapeRegional.com by clicking on the Volunteer tab on the home page and then the Auxiliary link. It is vital that interested students complete all three and return to the Scholarship Chairperson, Mary Ann Mosso, 1363 Virginia Ave., Cape May, NJ 08204. The Friends and Volunteers of the Ocean City Free Public Library seek donations of gently used books. The group will not accept magazines, textbooks, or books damaged by water or storms. Drop off books at the Circulation Desk of the Ocean City Free Public Library, 1735 Simpson Ave., Ocean City.

Go Blue event for child abuse awareness

CASA for Children of Atlantic and Cape May Counties will recognize Child Abuse Awareness Month in April with Go Blue for CASA.

Go Blue was created to help raise awareness of children living in foster care and the importance of CASA volunteers. Locally, CASA is hosting a Go Blue for CASA event from 5 to 8 p.m. April 14 at the Atlantic City Country Club in Northfield. The event will feature musicians Ben Clayton, Yuni Sabatino, Geri Rizzo and John Oelkers, light fare and signature cocktails, as well as prizes and giveaways. CASA also asks business and schools to participate in Go Blue for CASA Dress Down Day on April 12, the same day Gov. Chris Christie proclaims CASA Advocate Day. Scholarships available

The Greater Tuckahoe Area Merchants’ Association is offering educational scholarships to students who live within the geographic boundaries of the association and meet certain eligibility requirements.

Since 1998, the association has awarded about $100,000 to students from the greater Tuckahoe area. Applications will be accepted from high school seniors for the James and Martha Owens, Alex and Virginia May scholarships,and the Doris C. Stowell Scholarship program is in its fifth year.

One high school senior who meets special criteria established by Stowell will be selected as a recipient for the $5,000 Doris C. Stowell Scholarship. The number of scholarships for the James and Martha Owens Scholarship will be determined by the number of applicants, and the dollar amount will be set later, but will be at least $500. The Alex and Virginia May Scholarship is $1,000 and is for a high school senior who will attend a community college. The Owens and May scholarships for the high school seniors will be awarded after a student successfully completes the first college semester and provides the scholarship committee a copy of the transcript. The Stowell scholarship for a high school senior will be awarded after a student successfully completes the first year of college and provides the scholarship committee a copy of the transcript.

All applicants must be residents or dependents of residents, or dependents of business owners who operate within the GTAMA scholarship geographical boundaries, which are: to the north, the city limits of Corbin City; to the south, Cedar Swamp Creek; to the east, the intersection of Cedar Swamp Creek and Tuckahoe River if extended; to the west, the Dennis Township-Woodbine border.

Educational seminar offered

The Cape May County Department of Aging and Disability Services will host an educational seminar with the New Jersey Senior Medicare Patrol in April. Charles Clarkson, project director for the Senior Medicare Patrol of New Jersey, will provide information on how seniors can protect themselves from Medicare fraud, waste and abuse.

Senior courses offered

Atlantic Cape Community College’s Club 50 Plus will offer workshops this spring designed to enhance the personal, professional and social lives of older learners.

Manage, Edit and Email Your Photographs will prepare participants to move images from a digital camera to a computer, then edit and resize pictures for use on the Web or email. Students should bring to class a digital camera and a USB cable to connect to the computer. The class will take place from 9 a.m to noon April 19.

Volunteers sought for 4-H

Cape May County 4-H is looking for volunteers. Volunteer orientations are set for 6:30 to 8 p.m. May 16 and 6:30 p.m. June 20 at the Rutgers Cooperative Extension office, 355 Court House-South Dennis Road, Cape May Court House.

4-H is looking for club leaders for gardening, photography, science, engineering and technology and herpetology programs. Corporate and Leadership volunteers are being sought for the Cape May County 4-H Foundation as well as volunteers for the annual 4-H fair. Interested volunteers complete an application, attend training and meet with 4-H staff prior to their appointment. Volunteers serving as 4-H Club leaders are provided curriculum, resources and support for the clubs and programs they develop and implement.

N.J. hosts student competition for those of Indian origin

The North South Foundation, a volunteer-driven 501(c) e organization will hold an educational contest for students in first through 12th grades who are of Indian origin, on April 28 at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford. At least one parent or grandparent must be of Indian origin.

The proceeds collected through registration charges will be used for scholarships for disadvantaged college students in India. The Cherry Hill chapter of North South Foundation will help participants from the Atlantic City area with a math workshop, if enough students are interested. Free vacations offered

The Ocean City Tourism Commission, Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce and Ocean City Board of Realtors have once again joined forces to promote “America’s Greatest Family Resort” by awarding 11 families a weeklong family vacation in Ocean City.

Each winner will receive a seven-night stay in a three or four bedroom condo that sleeps as many as eight people. Pictures, addresses and descriptions of each unit are available on the contest entry page. Contest entry is through the Chamber’s website at OceanCityVacation.com. Entrants may enter one time for each of the eleven weeks per email address.

Winners will be randomly selected and notified about three weeks before their vacation. Winners will be selected beginning June 3 and each week following until Aug.12.

Youth arts program under way

The Center for Community Arts children’s art education programs have begun for the winter/spring term.

Paige Cunningham, a West Cape May resident, is teaching the theme “Animals in Art” for the Art at the Library Program. This yearlong art class for children ages 6 to 9 takes place from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in four locations; Sea Isle City on Mondays, Wildwood Crest on Tuesdays, Lower Township on Wednesdays, and Cape May on Thursdays. The class reads a book, discusses the illustrations and creates art inspired by the story. Many mediums are explored; clay, pastels, paint, sculpture, charcoal.

The Youth Arts Program program is back from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturdays for children ages 10 to 14. Located in two locations; Cape May and Lower Township, this program is a great way to spend a night with peers creating art in a comfortable, fun atmosphere. It’s free and includes all art materials and dinner.

Roller skating hours extended

Cape May Convention Hall will extend roller skating hours on Fridays and Sundays due to the overwhelming success of the roller skating program. Roller skating sessions will now run for five hours offering patrons more flexibility with when they want to arrive.

Doors for roller skating will open at 4 p.m. and close at 9 p.m. And Sundays, roller skating will begin at noon and conclude at 5 p.m. Saturdays will remain the same with two two hour sessions. The first session is from 1 to 3 p.m. and the second session is from 4 to 6 p.m. Skaters are encouraged to visit capemayrecreation.org for holiday hours and possible time changes.

Guests may bring their own standard or in-line skates or they can rent them from our facility. Admission and skate rentals are based on two hour allotments of time. Admission fee is $5 per person. Skate rental is $2 for traditional skates and $4 for in-line skates. Admission for nonskaters is $2.

Roller skating at Cape May Convention Hall will continue through Sunday, April 7 and then resume in December for the winter season.

Tickets on sale for concert series

Tickets for the Jersey Shore Pops Summer Concert Series are now on sale. Tickets will be available online and directly at the Middle Township Performing Arts Center Box Office, 212 Bayberry Road, Cape May Court House.

The concert series will include eight concerts with a focus on international guest stars from around the world. The series will open at the Middle Township Performing Arts Center the last weekend in June. The concert series is as follows: Irish Tenor, 7:30 p.m. June 29; Stars and Stripes Forever, 7:30 p.m. July 6; Legends in Concert, 7:30 p.m. July 13; The Italian Tenor, 7:30 p.m July 21; Swingin Sixties, 7:30 p.m. July 28; Classics Rock, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 4; The Glenn Miller Orchestra, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 10; Sinatra and Friends, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 17.

College offers professional training

Atlantic Cape Community College will offer a variety of professional development workshops this spring for individuals interested in enhancing their skill sets and advance their careers.

OSHA Electrical Review is a 10-hour certification course that concentrates on OSHA electrical compliance, April 8 and 9.

Personal Trainer Certification Phase II will teach personal trainers how to work with special populations suffering from diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity, as well as working with children, April 27.

Scholarship offered

The Nature Center of Cape May will offer the Randy Nuessle Memorial Scholarship Fund for a third year. This work-study program provides recipients with a $3,000 award each year throughout four years of college. Administered by Nature Center Director, Gretchen Whitman, the fund seeks to promote a deeper understanding and awareness of the natural sciences while encouraging responsible stewardship of our shared natural resources.

The fund was established by long term New Jersey Audubon members and volunteers, Barbara and Warren Nuessle in honor of their 16 year-old son, Randy, who died in 1984 of Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy.

Since this is a work study scholarship, selected students are obligated to serve as interns during the school year or summer for a total of 150 hours. In addition, the Nature Center staff serves as the intern supervisors and assist students and their schools in obtaining college credit under the school’s cooperative education programs.

Eligibility for the fund is limited to graduating seniors from designated high schools in Cape May County. A committee, composed of members representing lhe Nature Center of Cape May and the community of Cape May, ensures that selected students have demonstrated academic excellence while giving special consideration to those with financial need.

Bridges conference planned

The Partners for Connections in Education (P4CE) will present the Bridges Conference 2013: Connecting Higher Ed and K-12 May 8 to 10 at the Cape May Convention Center. The Bridges Conference will showcase unique partnerships and projects that are helping higher education and K-12 to work together on enhancing the continuum of available educational opportunities for students of all ages.

The conference will feature many innovate programs that look beyond the traditional institutional role on behalf of high student achievement and the development of creative and innovative students through economically feasible programs and projects between colleges and K-12 school. The conference will also feature Keynote Sessions from Hall Davidson from the Discovery Educator Network, Steve Zalot from Apple Computers and Melanie Andrich from Eduventures. Special Topic Sessions and small group “hands on” presentations will also be available throughout the conference. The Bridges Conference is co-sponsored by Wilkes University, PLS-Third Learning, Discovery Education and the Chester County Intermediate Unit.

Income tax return forms will be prepared free for people of any age with incomes less than $50,000. The forms will be completed through April 15 through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.

College offers culinary classes

The Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College offers amateur chefs and food enthusiasts the opportunity to learn how to prepare a variety of tasty meals this spring.

Chef Jon Davies will teach students how to prepare three- and four-course dinners from around the world with the “An Evening in” Series on April 5 and 16 and May 3.

PAC, youth orchestra partner with Pops

The Middle Township Performing Arts Center has announced that the Atlantic Youth Orchestra will join forces with the Jersey Shore Pops for the 2013 season. This will be a continuation of a partnership started last year with the Pops orchestra hiring six of Atlantic Youth Orchestra’s outstanding members. The goal is to prepare these students for a possible professional music career as well as draw a younger audience to the orchestral concerts.

Police academy seeks candidates

The Cape May County Police Academy is accepting applications from aspiring police officers for the Alternate Route Training Program scheduled to start the Basic Course for Police Officers on Aug. 26. Applications are available through April 30.

This program, offers would-be-officers a better chance at employment as they become eligible for full police certification when they graduate. The program is the only residential based academy in the state of New Jersey for municipal officers requiring them to live on base while they train. The tuition cost is $3,300 which includes instruction, lodging, meals, ammunition, and textbooks.

Alternate Route Applicants must be 18 or older and have 60 college credits by September 2013 or two years of full time military service. To be eligible for selection, the candidates must pass written, physical, oral and psychological exams as well as a background check.

Applications are available from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Public Safety Training Center located at 171 Crest Haven Road, Cape May Court House. Applicants must pick up their own application and bring photo identification and a fee of $75 which may be paid in cash, check or money order, made out to County of Cape May.

The Ocean City Fine Arts League presents free pre-screened films featuring artists and art trends every month through June 2013.

Reassurance calls offered

The volunteers at CONTACT Cape-Atlantic offer free daily phone calls to say hello and check that all is well to help the disabled, elderly, and isolated citizens of Atlantic and Cape May counties who want to continue living independently. Volunteers also are needed to make the calls. Volunteers manage calls in 2½-hour shifts — 8:30 to 11 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m. This service is provided daily from phone centers in Margate and Cape May Court House.
