The North Wildwood Fire Department has received a $110,480 federal grant from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, which will be used to purchase self-contained breathing apparatus cylinders and an updated SCBA fill station for the department.

The department's SCBA cylinders have a shelf life that will expire at the end of this year, therefore purchasing new ones was a necessity, said Chief Jeffrey Cole, of the North Wildwood Fire Department.

"That in itself is a large expense," Cole said.

The department was also in dire need of a new SCBA fill station - the air compressor used to fill the SCBA cylinders - as its current one is outdated and inefficient.

"It's about 25 years old and is in need of repairs," Cole said.

The fire department wrote out a grant proposal for $116,294 to fund these needs. The $110,480 AFG award covered a large majority and the city contributed the remaining $5,814.
