One person was killed this morning a single-vehicle crash on Route 47 in Middle Township after the driver fell asleep at the wheel, police said.
The accident occurred at about 7:23 a.m. between Dias Creek Road and Hand Avenue.
According to police, Lacey Marlow, 18, of Gloucester, was driving north in a gold Ford Taurus when she fell asleep, causing the vehicle to drift off the roadway and strike a tree.
Marlow's 19-year-old passenger, whose name has not been released pending notification of family, was killed on impact. Marlow was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center for treatment. Her condition was not immediately available.
Route 47 has been the site of numerous fatal motor vehicle accidents. One crash last month left two dead, including a 29-year-old corrections officer from Millville. In 2012, two teenagers were struck and killed by an alleged drunken driver three miles north of Saturday's accident scene.
Today's crash remains under investigation by township police and the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office.
Firefighters from the Cape May Court House Fire Company responded to the scene and helped extricate the victims from the vehicle. Firefighters from the Goshen, Green Creek and Rio Grand companies assisted.
