WILDWOOD - A 20-year-old local man, along with a 17-year-old male, have been charged in connection with a Monday afternoon shooting in Wildwood.

The shooting, reported at about 2:50 p.m., left an 34-year-old man from the Villas section of Lower Township with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

A city police detective was in the area at the time of the shooting call and found the 17-year-old near the corner of Garfield and Pacific avenues, just down the block from the shooting.

The victim, whose name has not been released due to safety concerns by the county Prosecutor's Office, was able to identify the suspect before being airlifted to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, mainland division.

The 17-year-old was then arrested and the investigation also led to the arrest of a second person, Jose Roman, who police said was also involved in the assault.

The victim is expected to make a full recovery, according to the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office.

Prosecutor Robert Taylor said the handgun used in the shooting malfunctioned, but had it worked properly "it was likely the victim's injuries would have been fatal."

Roman and the juvenile were charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

The juvenile was also charged with attempted murder, a first-degree crime, aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, and possession of a weapon by a minor.

Roman is being held in the Cape May County Correctional Center in lieu of $50,000 bail. The juvenile is being held at the Juvenile Detention Facility in Bridgeton.

Taylor said additional charges may be forthcoming.
