Students win essay contest
Rita Marino, of Wildwood Catholic High School, for grades nine-12, and Alexa Davis, of the Margaret Mace Elementary School, for grade eight, won the Patriotic Essay contest at VFW Post 5941 in North Wildwood.
They and winners from other Cape May County posts will go on to compete at district, state and national levels. The top national award for grades nine through 12 is a $30,000 scholarship. The national prize for grades six through eight is a $10,000 savings bond.
Hume to be honored
The Greater Cape May Elks Lodge in Villas will present Marvin Hume, of Sunset Beach, with the Elk's Presidential Volunteer award for his outstanding dedication honoring the fallen heroes of war with his flag ceremony conducted each day at Sunset Beach at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 13.

NWFD receives award
The North Wildwood Fire Department recently received the 2011 Life Safety Achievement Award for outstanding efforts on behalf of fire and life safety.
The National Fire Research and Education Foundation, Residential Fire Safety Institute and Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance presented the award, which is for community involvement and educational programs, as well as for assisting other communities to raise fire safety consciousness. The department visits schools and participates in community events such as National Night Out, Crime Watch meetings and other outreach programs.
The Fire Prevention and Inspection Division operates under the Fire Department's administration.
