Plans for a mainland campus of the Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center in Margate will be revealed at a public meeting Dec. 18 at the Linwood Country Club.
The campus would include an indoor Olympic-sized swimming pool and an outdoor swimming complex, which would cater to a swim team as well as individuals in the community.
“With demographic shifts on the island, more and more individuals and families have requested services on the mainland,” Executive Director Jack Fox said.
A statement released last week invites residents of Linwood, Northfield, Somers Point and Egg Harbor Township to give their input on the project, which will likely be built in Linwood.
“There is a preliminary dialogue about a possible partnership with Linwood Country Club in creating this new facility on that site,” Fox said. “Preliminary survey results indicate that a comprehensive swim program including an indoor/outdoor pool and children’s play area as well as and adult lounge area is needed.”
A community survey was conducted through previous meetings, and the conclusion of the planning phase includes the town hall-style meeting to get public input and determine “what services and programs they would like from the JCC on the mainland,” Fox said.
Rabbi David Weis at Beth Israel in Northfield said the JCC serves a greater population outside the Jewish community so it is likely the facility would be used.
“The Jewish community has grown in large numbers on the mainland for years,” Weis said. “It’s great the plan is finally getting realized.”
The outdoor facility would include a component of a family park, allowing families to bring their children, spend the day, and enjoy food from first-class snack bars. Plans to add additional programs over time are in consideration.
