After opening last May in Ventnor, relocating to a bigger space in Margate around January, and then being forced to relocate again after a fire the same month, Anchor Arts - a "no skills necessary" art studio - has had a big year.
Owned and operated by Brittany Czekai, the quaint art studio, which offers kids arts and crafts, open paint night, private parties, and organized painting classes, has moved steadily onward and is now teaming up with local women who own businesses to present a "mommy and me" day to the community.
The event was conceived a year ago by friends, photographer Erin McDevitt and makeup artist Kacey Rosenberger, as a "fun day" that would support local business as well as offer an enjoyable experience to mothers and children.
"Last year, we did it at a friend's house, and it was a huge hit," McDevitt said. "This year, I met Brittany at the playground, because we're both mothers, and we got to talking, and we (found out) we're both business owners."
McDevitt invited Czekai to participate in the event, which happens to fall on the one-year anniversary of Anchor Arts to the day, and the grand opening of Czekai's new studio.
"My business has evolved around moms and children and family, so after talking with Erin we thought it would be a good idea to have it here," Czekai said. "There's been a lot of confusion about my address, and I never really got a chance to have a grand opening at my other location before it caught on fire."
The Mommy and Me event will be organized like a small open house or "mini market" featuring the participating businesses. If desired, preregistration for a mini makeover and photo session with Rosenberger and McDevitt can be arranged.
Around 10 businesses will offer a variety of products and services such as boutique children's clothing, jarred sauces, accessories and purses, repurposed vintage jewelry, and green juices, among other things.
"There are so many women in Margate that have businesses," Czekai said. "We want to celebrate that there are a lot of powerful women in town, and we have a lot of great businesses run by local women."
Czekai will be doing a small craft with the children during the event. They will be painting "mommy and me" picture frames.
"It's the week before Mother's Day, so it's a little something fun to do on a Sunday," McDevitt said. "It's something to get outside and walk around - a support type of thing."
This year's event will be held at Anchor Arts Studio, 17 S. Essex Ave., at its new location.
