Each month has a theme to which teachers and faculty dedicate classroom time in order to diversify the experiences of the students.

"We find that the students really connect more when we start off the year with a theme," Rudnesky said.

This year's theme is "You are A+ Star." On the first day of school, the incoming fifth-graders will walk into school on a red carpet, and be welcomed by the rising eighth-graders, Rudnesky said.

"We also have a service learning platform where we highlight a character trait every month," Rudnesky said.

November's trait is gratitude, December's is acceptance, January focuses on leadership with the remembrance of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, February is inspiration month in light of the 2014 Winter Olympics, and March will highlight female leadership with Woman's history month, it is also visual and performing arts month. Belhaven will take a break in April because of spring break and May will be the school's traditional school spirit month. Belhaven designates June for "finishing strong."

Belhaven Middle will have its first day Sept. 3.
