Northfield

Veterans Memorial Park work under way

Work on Phase II of Veterans Memorial Park, 1913 Oak Ave., is under way.

The bricks and benches are being installed in order of donation. In late May, the first two sponsored benches were permanently placed on their concrete pads and donation plaques were installed, with others to follow soon. On May 30, Northfield officials and the Mainland Regional High School school-to-work program students and teachers helped install 73 new bricks in the monument walkway.

The park has been almost entirely donor funded, and more remains to do. Bricks and benches are still available and order forms (bricks $50 and benches $1,000) may be obtained at the City Clerk’s office.

Seniors meeting set

A seniors meeting with music and refreshments is set for 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 27 at Birch Grove Park Center.

All Northfield senior citizens are invited to attend this performance by the Jimmy Marshall Duo. The event is free to Northfield seniors, no reservations required. Light refreshments will follow.

Somers Point

Garden Contest scheduled

The Green Thumb Garden Club of Somers Point is sponsoring its second Garden Contest from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 29.

The “Down to Earth” theme is to encourage and give gardeners practical planting ideas. One of the gardens on the tour will be the newly replanted Native Garden on Ambler Road.

The goal for the tour is to encourage beautification of the city. City Council supports and encourages gardeners in native planting and organic planting, which will draw more wildlife such as butterflies and birds to our area.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Great Bay Gallery, 829 Bay Avenue, Carol’s Beauty Shop, 426 Shore Road, and at the Senior Center on Ambler Road on the day of the tour. At the end of the tour all ticket holders can stop at Latz’s by the Bay, 801 Bay Ave., for some garden punch and a treat. For more information call Vivian at 609-926-0418.
