Somers Point

Grants available to students

The Somers Point Historical Society is offering Somers Point resident high school juniors and seniors an opportunity for grants, available on a competitive basis to juniors and seniors who are attending a high school program. Homeschooled students may apply.

Two grants totaling $1,500 may be awarded to the two finalists. Students will conduct a research project on an aspect of the history of Somers Point. Content about Somers Point must be significant. The finished project could be in written form, an audio visual presentation or other suitable format. Topics could include but are not limited to World War II: The Home Front and Those Who Served, the Great Depression, Things That Are Not Here Anymore, and more. The end result must be a project that may be used by other students and community members and would become the property of the Somers Point Historical Society.

A brief description of the topic proposal must be presented by Jan. 15. The grant committee will meet with the applicants by Feb. 1 prior to research. Completed projects must be submitted by May 15. Lateness will limit the amount of the award. Awards will be made at the end of the year ceremony at the student's school. Students may be asked to submit proof of residency as well as grade level. A list of topics is also available.

Copies of the application are available online at somerspointhistory.org, at the guidance department of the student's school, or by writing to the Somers Point Historical Society, PO Box 517, Somers Point, NJ 08244. Call 609-927-2900.
