A Linwood man accused of inappropriately touching a boy in his care in 2011 was sentenced to three years in prison Friday.

Stephen Giannantonio, 58, of the 2200 block of Shore Road, pleaded guilty this June to second-degree sexual assault against the then-12-year-old boy, who was the son of a friend.

The incident happened Nov. 9, 2011, and Giannantonio was arrested four days later, according to the charges.

Under the plea agreement, Giannantonio was sentenced under the range of a third-degree crime.

“The boy’s father left his son in the care of the defendant whom he trusted and, in turn, the defendant chose to victimize the boy instead,” Assistant Prosecutor John Flammer said during sentencing.

Giannantonio must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole. He then will have to register as a Megan’s Law sex offender and face lifetime supervision.
