A Margate man accused of exposing himself to a Linwood girl on her way to school in 2010 pleaded guilty Monday as jury selection began for his trial.
Paul Campo, 38, was accused of luring the 10-year-old girl behind a Forest Drive home less than two blocks from the Seaview Avenue School on April 30, 2010, then exposing and fondling himself in front of her. When he grabbed the girl and pulled down her skirt, she got on her bike and rode to school, where she notified teachers.
Campo pleaded guilty to second-degree sexual assault and faces seven years in prison on that charge. Under the No Early Release Act, he would have to serve 85 percent — or 5 years, 11 months — on that charge. He also pleaded guilty to luring, with a six-year flat sentence to be served consecutively.
In April 2011, Campo turned down a plea agreement that would give him a seven-year sentence, with the mandatory 85 percent.
This is not the first time Campo has faced similar charges.
In 2008, he pleaded guilty to indecent exposure and stalking for an incident in Boynton Beach, Fla.
In that case, a 12-year-old girl told police that the man had been watching her and her sister play in their driveway for more than two hours, then called her over to the car and told her to meet him around the corner at an empty church, according to an affidavit obtained by The Press of Atlantic City.
Still inside his sport utility vehicle with New Jersey plates, the man introduced himself as “Paul from New Jersey” and tried to get the girl to lift her skirt, she told police. When she refused, he called her closer to the car and exposed and touched himself. He was sentenced to 12 months’ probation and ordered to pay restitution, records in Florida show.
As part of his plea in the Linwood case, he must register as a Megan’s Law offender and faces lifetime supervision.
Court records also list Campo as having an address in Lumberton, Burlington County.
